Having so much trouble getting anything to play on my Xbox from my Plex server. Same content works fine on Apple TV, and on the Xbox when played through the DNLA app instead of the Plex app.
Can anyone recommend what settings to use on the server for best results? Are there known issues with the Xbox client? This is 480p content.
There are no settings on the server side that you can change. If you are having issues with the XBox app, the best option is to recreate the issue then provide a post with details on what the error is, how to reproduce it, and provide the logs from the app and server.
You’ll need to be more specific on where you are seeing these settings? Looks like you may be getting some server settings mixed up with Plex Web client settings.
If the playback is not smooth, there could be many causes, so it’s hard to say what may fix it. It could be the server is not powerful enough to transcode, or your network is too slow, or the video itself is bad.
If files are being transcoded and you are on a low end machine, this server setting may help.
Set that to “Prefer higher speed encoding”.
I think you are referring to the setting in the Plex Web client. Those do not affect the Android client. I don’t remember if the Android client has those settings. Either way, enabling those just allows the streams to work that way. It does not guarantee that they don’t transcode. That’s based on other factors.
Ok, Tried the transcoder quality setting set to fast and it seemed to make a difference for my 480p content. But my 720p content is being transcoded and looks like crap (blurry). Again, viewing from xbox built-in DNLA client it looks great.
I also tried the “disable video stream transcoding” setting and it didn’t play at all (threw an error). It’s like the Plex client for xbox refuses to actually use Direct Play or Direct Stream.
Note that on the xbox client, there are settings for whether to use direct play or direct stream, and you can also force this per-video by going to the info pane about the movie you’re playing.
That’s possible depending on the video you are watching. The DLNA player has access to codec support that isn’t available to the Plex app, so we are somewhat limited.
