To this day, and since the Xbox One app was originally redesigned, the Plex for Xbox One app still cannot reliably play Plex DVR content. All of my DVR content is transcoded as it is recorded (I have a powerful Plex Media Server), so it is all optimized before playback. I also have remove commercials enabled.
However, playing any Plex DVR content ALWAYS requires that I first disable Direct Play and Direct Streaming, or the app will endlessly show the status of “Buffering”.
Even more annoying is the fact that you cannot reliably skip forward when playing back Plex DVR content on an Xbox One S. If you skip forward too many times (which seems to be random), the player will hang buffering. If you stop the playback and choose to resume where it hung, the stream continues playing until you try to skip forward “too many times” again. This does NOT happen on other players such as Roku.
Additionally, the Plex app for Xbox One S doesn’t show thumbnails when you want to skip forward in the video like the Roku app does. It’s either fast forward or skip forward, with no preview tiles. So you’re just sort of guessing where you want to be in the stream; and crossing your fingers that the player doesn’t get stuck “Buffering” again.
I don’t know why it is that the Xbox One app is so incredibly buggy compared to Roku. But I’ve been hoping for years that it will someday be at least as reliable as the one for Roku.
