XBOX One X - Direct Stream Problem with 4k H265 Content

I’m hoping somebody can help me with my plex setup. First some background:

Latest Version of Plex Server - Version 1.15.2.793, running on Server 2016 Standard Edition with nVidia Quadro P2000

TV - 4K LG (non HDR)

Player - XBOX One X set to 4K

Connectivity of all Devices - Gigabit ethernet with cat 6 cables

H265 Content 4k - 8bit (also tested 10 bit) encoded with DVDFAB 11 (handbreak also tested), CRF quality setting set to 22, AC3 5.1 audio

H265 Content 1080p - 8bit encoded with DVDFAB 11, CRF quality setting set to 22, AC3 5.1 audio

H264 Content 1080p - 8 bit encoded with DVDFAB 11 CRF quality set to 20, AC3 5.1 audio

I’ve always had problems with media over a certain bit rate when using direct play, it just buffers constantly which I understand is a long standing issue with the xbox one. To date I have overcome this problem by just disabling direct play and allowing all content to just direct stream which has worked fine for H264 or H265 content in 1080p. However I recently I upgraded my xbox one to an xbox one x in order to start upgrading my content to 4K. Unsurprisingly the direct play buffering problem is still present, but my usual work around of direct stream just causes the plex app to quit back to the xbox home stream every time I start playback.

I can take the same movie file, encode it in exactly the same way using H265 codec into two versions a 1080p and a 4k copy. The 1080p copy will direct stream but the 4k one instantly crashes back to the Xbox home screen. I have tried enabling/disabling every option or combination of options within the plex app without any success. In have done the same within the xbox one x display settings all to no avail.

I have tried encoding the files with DVDFAB 11 (which is what I have always used) and handbreak without success.

Has anyone else experienced the above problem with direct stream and 4K H265 content? Logs below:

I currently have an issue where 4k videos with HDT DTS-MA audio crashes back to the home screen in plex.

Other 4k HDR content from AC3 5.1 and AAC 5.1 audio tends to do ok but I’ll still sometimes get buffering in a loop where it should not

4k HDR TrueHD content will transcode the audio to AAC for some reason and that causes audio dropouts and buffering ever 15 second or so.

I’m currently ont he Alpha Preview program on the Xbox and MS claimed they fixed the 4k issues in an update about a week ago in Alpha but this did not work and may have caused further issues

One of the Devs here @Moussa has gather some logs from me and he says some of these things are being worked on but the more users having this issue and reporting it the better.

Your setup is very similar to mine where I have the Plex server running on a good spec’d PC and am using the Beta version of Plex server trying to play 4k HDR content to an Xbox One X.

Conversely I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 that support 4k HDR and I’m able to play all my content on my Tablet in original quality walking around my house on wifi without issue so this rules out problems with my Plex server

It is some oddball combination of Plex + Xbox that still has a lot of 4k HDR streaming problems to iron out.
