Xbox and 4k - looking for some clarity

Server Version#:1.23.1.4602
Player Version#: (latest? no updates available via xbox store)

Can anyone confirm if this is a known issue or am I chasing ghosts and there is something that can be enabled to make 4K content work on Xbox (xbox one x, 4K enabled)?

below picture shows the same sample played on both - xbox where it is somehow falling back to transcoding to HD and keeps buffering, making 90% of the content I have totally unplayable, VS native LG smart TV plex player app that works fine at all times…

plexplayerissue

I read FAQ saying it might be caused by improper recognition of secondary audio stream, but this is happening on a sample with single audio track.

The only reason why I am considering Xbox here is that because my LG tv does not have ability to delay video stream and compensate the delay when playing audio over arc, while xbox stream allows my home theater to arrange near perfect lip sync…

That file should be able to be direct played. In the app there is an option to enable logging to your server. Turn that on then try playing that file again. Let it play for 30 seconds then stop. Wait about 1 minute to make sure the info gets logged then grab the PMS logs and post it here.

Plex Media Server-xbox stream1.log (282.5 KB)
attaching the server log cropped from the moment I started playing the content on Xbox. let me know if there is another log or if the window of this log is not long enough (first time looking at PMS logs).

what strikes me is this:

Unable to find client profile for device; platform=Xbox, platformVersion=10.0.19041.8128, device=Xbox, model=Xbox One X

after several attempts it just starts transcoding…

You’re playing an HDR file and something doesn’t support HDR in your setup. The XBox itself should support it so it could be your TV or receiver if you have that.

Edit - Wait a second. That depends on the resolution and refresh rate. Let me double check what it is using.

Edit 2 - Ok, so display mode 9 (4k, 24 fps) does support HDR so that is fine. I see it did try to direct play but something failed.

Playback error occurred. Reason: Unknown, An unknown player error occurred. code: 3, message: Decode

So the player couldn’t decode something, not sure if it’s the audio or video or juts something in the file header. So it tries to direct stream the file and that appears to work. So there is something in the file as-is that is preventing the app from direct playing it. You could try remuxing the file yourself to see if that helps, but this points to something in the file.

The alternative is some setting on the XBox’s output. I don’t have an XBox, but something you can look into.

I wonder if it’s related to this issue.

The file isn’t actually transcoding, just direct stream. The height of the file is 2160 so it’s not that either.

Edit - My mistake. It is transcoding.

If the display height is 2160, and it came from Blu-Ray, then the coded height is probably 2176. That’s why it reminded me of that other thread and @moussa’s info about the Xbox.

@plexik1 do you have any content that’s shorter than 2160 tall, and does it work?

Hmm. I’ll ask. Maybe the decoder works now with direct stream.

3840x1600 does seem to work fine, HDR on, direct play disabled, direct stream enabled…

Xbox limitation? Time to go Nvidia?

My mistake earlier. It was transcoding. Yes, it is an XBox limitation if your 2160 height file is actually encoded >2160. You can see the discussion in the thread link a few comments up. I checked with the team and that limitation does still exist.
