Xbox Series X Plex app transcoding everything

Can someone in support please answer if when the series x gets audio pass through will the issue be resolved?

Have you seen this?

Xbox is still not quite as flexible/compatible with a large variety of content that shield is, but at least it is working (for me) within the current limits.

What I don’t understand is how the Amazon fire stick 4K Plex app can direct play wirelessly from my shield, but the Plex app on my series x with a wired connection can’t play anything.

How is that even possible? Can someone please explain that?

I am going to keep bumping this topic so it doesn’t get closed and hopefully one of these years this issue will get resolved so Plex will be usable on Xbox.

I haven’t had any issues with playback (except for recorded TV) since they released the audio pass-through version. Everything else is playing back really well now

My Xbox Series X Plex app transcodes my 4K HDR files to 1080p when using internal subtitles. If I use external SRT files, it will play the original formal at 4k HDR for a while, but every 20 minutes or so, the subtitles will go off and I need to stop the streaming and restart. Some stuttering can also occur. Home network is not the issue. I am also using the xbox passthrough for audio. All in all, this is not a seamless experience, unlike what I can get with the Plex app on the AppleTV.

I have similar errors.

Cannot direct play with protocol: http, codec: dca. Not found in profile. Cannot direct stream with protocol: dash, codec: dca. Not found in profile. App cannot direct play this item. Direct play is disabled.

I have the dolby atmos app for headphones and dts x for headphones app. On my series x, under headphones driver i have tried both “app/drivers”.

Same BS.

Plex people it would be nice if the plex developers for xbox could get on a conference call with the Dolby and Microsoft people on a group zoom chat, and maybe the DTS and microsoft people on another chat. maybe come to some sorta meeting of the minds on the way forward.

You see atmos and dts work on netflix, and they work on prime video. The series x is certainly powerful enough. I just don’t think you guys are talking.

I mean ultimately I will end up needing a shield. for a proper home theater.
But the series x has the power, and has a very nice pair of atmos ready/dts ready headphones. Both paid for. You don’t need to pay for them for home theater, passthru, but you need to pay for it for the headphones. It would be nice to watch a movie with awesome, non-transcoded sound without waking up the rest of the house.

I know you guys want to incorporate all these new great things into plex. But in my opinion which I am sure counts for squat, having paid for a lifetime membership. That working on audio would be a priority.

Just tried plex for kodi. No go, very choppy playback.

but guess what
VLC for series x. plays flawlessly. I have 7.1 no transcoding.

Interesting.
Plex is everywhere, i have seen it written as a downloadable app for commercial TVs with proprietary OS’s. I have seen it on AppleTv, android, sony Playstation, microsoft xbox. amazon firesticks. Damn near everything. I gave them 150 bucks for lifetime membership and yet Audio is an issue.

VLC got none of my money, despite using it on my mac ages ago before plex. And it just works.

I know devs are tired of us Plex users for xbox complaining. But VLC probably sees a fraction of what you guys take in. not sure why you guys can’t do what they do. Maybe I am missing something.

I just came here to rant too. My stupid FireTV stick can play any file I throw at it even at 4K HDR at massive bitrates on the loussy 100mbit interface.

I have a Xeon E5 server at home, 10-cores 20-threads dedicated as Plex Server and everything works on a single 100mbit connection for the FireTV stick, yet, on my super powerful Xbox Series X the video receives constant stuttering (and I mean constant). Seems related to the way it reads and plays the information out because if I rewind 5 seconds and replay, the stuterring is not there anymore, so it’s not specific to certain frames, but pure random
and the stuttering is literally driving me nuts.

The Xbox Series X is connected through a gigabit adapter and there it goes into the switch, which is doing network teaming with 5Gbits of bandwith coming from the server.

I can’t understand how the most powerful console that should put a single FireTV stick to shame can falter this much.

Same issue my side , mibox plays 4k flawlessly , xbox series x stuttering/buffering constantly

I had this problem as well, both on a Windows based server, and then on a Synology box.
The problem was shown in the log:
Aug 28, 2021 18:10:25.241 [0x7f467137cb38] DEBUG - [Now] Device is Xbox (XBOX).
Aug 28, 2021 18:10:25.242 [0x7f467137cb38] ERROR - Unable to find client profile for device; platform=Xbox, platformVersion=10.0.22000.1759, device=Xbox, model=Xbox Series X

Since there’s no profile, it doesn’t think the Xbox can do anything, so it’s trying to transcode everything to simple formats.

For me, the following fixed it: copy the Xbox One.xml profile, and rename it to Xbox.xml, then inside the profile (1st or 2nd line), change the device name from Xbox One to Xbox, and then after reboot, my stuttering problems went away.

Can you please post the Xbox profile you are using so I can try that?

Processing: Xbox.xml

Xbox.zip (777 Bytes)

Hopefully this attachment works, it wanted it zipped first, not sure why.

Thanks for that but placing it inside my profile folder on my Plex server didn’t seem to do anything.

If you download the logs from your server, and look at the latest Plex Media Server.log file and search from the bottom up for Xbox, you should have two DEBUG entries, one that says:
[Now] Device is Xbox (XBOX).
[Now] Profile is Xbox

If that is happening, and you’re still getting the problem with stuttering, then you’ve got something else going on in your world, and I’m afraid I can’t help, since that fixed mine.

I have to re-add the Xbox.xml file every time I upgrade the server on my synology.
Any chance there will be an official Xbox Series X profile added?

At this point I’ve all but given up on Plex for Xbox. Plex for fire tv works better than a $500 ultimate gaming system. Not sure how that is even possible but here we are.

I think I have the same issue as you. How is it that the profiles could be missing for us but not for others? Also do you have any idea where the profile folder should go if running Plex in a docker container?

I suspect it’s missing for everyone. It maybe that that there have another problem and that their server is big enough to transcode everything without caring? Not sure.
I don’t know where the profiles are stored in docker. In the synology they are at:
/var/packages/PlexMediaServer/target/Resources/Profiles
