Plex for Xbox One incessantly buffering

I am direct streaming on 1GE LAN from my Mac Mini (not peaking CPU or memory or anything) to an Xbox One. I can see remote users transcoding and happily enjoying movies on their iPads and other devices (including an Xbox one, which IS transcoding because he’s far away).

However I, with my ultra-high-speed connection and my rock solid server, am experiencing constant buffering – to the point where it is now impossible to watch Plex.

I was running PMS 1.11.XXX but just upgraded to 1.13.XXX but this had no effect. Rebooting the server had no effect.

A hard restart of the Xbone appears to have alleviated the problem. This tells me there’s a leak or other fault in the client, not the server.

This of course has arisen since the recent (June 29?) Xbox app update.

Yes it does it to me too and it doesn’t have anything to do with the network or your PC. I can play Plex on my smart TV in full 4k with no buffering at all. I switch to my xbox one x which is on the same network as the TV and I get buffering constantly, switching resolution and dropping HDR so that it is unplayable. I am just glad my LG TV plays them or I would be picketing outside the Plex office. This has gone on FAR TOO LONG with the xbox. This needs to be fixed asap.

Yes as far as i can tell this is still an issue - don’t know what the status is though

There is currently an active issue Moussa is working with Microsoft on when direct streaming HEVC video to the Xbox One client. It should not be affecting other video codecs (Such as H264) or HEVC video that is direct playing.

If this is happening with different video codecs or under other circumstances let us know and I can forward on information to Moussa to forward on to Microsoft.

I am also facing similar issues; my LG TV can play a 4k HEVC video without issue, picking up HDR etc over wifi. Xbox One X is hardwired to router and struggles with buffering on the same video files. Glad to know this is being worked on but similarly frustrating having an Xbox One X with all that processing power being out done by the wimpy processor my tv has baked in!

The current planned released for an update to fix the buffering loop is hopefully for late tuesday, early wednesday.

My buffering issue is primarily related to audio, as it always needs to transcode the audio file. I can never get plex server to direct play a TrueHD audio file to the xbox one x plex client. Are there any clients that can support truehd or hd ma?

The v2.17.1 update should be now rolling out to users, which includes possible performance improvements for streaming 4K media. Please give it a try and let me know if it helps!

Didn’t seem to work unfortunately, I’m on 2.17.1.70 and after a few minutes, it gets hung up buffering.

Yup. Didn’t work.

i got a great improvement from this weeks update.
Just tried it on a 4k HDR remux. previously it would take forever for a movie to even start but now almost instantly. IT did pause 3x throughout the film ( first time at 45 mins ) where previously every 5 seconds it would pause. The 3x it did pause during the movie when it came back both HDR and audio went bye bye. Hopefully a bit of a tweak and they will have sorted it out

I still get this on my XBOX One constantly. Its very frustrating

Can confirm I am having the same issue. The major annoying part is when it does it near the end of a video and then you can’t continue from where it left off

I’m having this issue too and it’s much worse than it was before. I used to be able to at least jump back 10 seconds so it could correct itself, but now it just hangs. And as @owlright mentioned, it’s very frustrating when it hangs at the end of the show and you can’t get back to the end to watch the last 30 seconds of the show.

Same issue here .- Xbox One X. Will play 20 seconds then buffer 5 minutes, looks like its restarting the file but will then play another 30 seconds and buffer again - unusable.

We’re still exploring solutions for this issue with Microsoft. If you’re still experiencing this issue it would be helpful to see logs, but especially metadata XML for affected media. Thanks.

Still getting the issue today on my Xbox One. Can’t believe this problem has been allowed to continue for so long without a fix. Extremely frustrating.

Been trying to get 4k Direct play working on xbox one x for over a week and it is doing my head in! All HVEC / H265 content gets transcoded into H264! WHY surely tthe “most powerful” console on the planet can support HVEC and H265 codec?

Also all audio gets transcoded…again WHY!

Nvidia shield blows this out the water and its 3 years old…

Any fix due?
