Xfinity to GoNetSpeed, plex server not accessible

Recent convert from Xfinity to GoNetSpeed. I used to be able to access my Plex server from outside my network but now I can’t. I saw a couple of old, locked post regarding this same issue but I’m still uncertain of what the final solution is?

Do I need to purchase a static IP from GoNetSpeed for this to work or are there specific settings I need to set in my server or Orbi router to for success?

I’ve already set my macmini which runs the server to have a static internal IP. But I’ve found the port continuously changes. Same effect as the previously reported threads. Shows that it’s accessible externally for a moment then red x.
I hade the service installed Friday morning and it’s now Sunday evening and still unreachable.

GoNetSpeed IT is supposed to be reach out to me in regards to my request for a static IP, hoping I can save some $ and not need it.

Thanks for any info you all have.

You don’t need a static IP (public) address for Plex remote access to work.

standard questions when it comes to remote access:

  • Is remote access actually not working or do you only refer to the status indicator within Plex’ remote access settings?
  • How did you configure Plex and your router? Are you using an automatic configuration or did you establish a manual port forward in that router?
  • Can you access your router’s public IP address at tcp port 32400 or the respective port you defined in the port forward? – you can check this using a service such as canyouseeme.org

Last not least it could be worth checking what kind of public IP address is being assigned to your router by your new ISP. Some ISPs no longer assign actual “public” IP addresses but setup their network like a home network (CGNAT). If you’re in one of those, you’ll definitely run into big trouble when it comes to enabling Plex remote access.

Hi tom80H, thanks for chiming in.

In response to your questions.
Remote access is not working via a Direct connection, also the status indicator within Plex is red.
I’ve found that my friend is able to connect remotely via a Roku box, but on my end it says it is an indirect connection and it limits his stream to what looks like a max of 1mb. I am able to connect via my cell phone over cellular, again, Indirect connection, limited stream capacity.
I am a Plex Pass member.
But with switching from Xfinity to Gonetspeed, I am no longer able to connect via a Direct Connection.

I configured my Macmini which runs the Plex Server to have a static internal IP with the Router and have setup the internal port forward to that machine at 32400.

I cannot access the router’s public IP at port 32400

Last but not least, I am unsure how Gonetspeed, Fiber service, assigns my public IP to the ONT then to the Router.

I had missed that part earlier… can you verify the Orbi is configured as an access point only? If you have each, the router and the Orbi, act as their own network provider, each of them will assign its own IP addresses. This can cause big trouble with Plex (double NAT)… basically your situation will look like this:

Double NAT

  1. your ISP assigns a public IP address to your router
  2. the router assigns a private IP address to the Orbi
  3. the Orbi assigns a private IP address to the Plex Media Server

Target

  1. your ISP assigns a public IP address to your router (no way for you to change that, nor do you want to  )
  2. the router assigns a private IP address to the Plex Media Server (while the Orbi will only pass the network traffic through… not interfering with the actual network management).

As for the indirect connection… If your Plex client cannot directly connect to the Plex Media Server, it’ll route all traffic through a Plex hosted relay. This is indeed limited to max. 1 Mbit/s (up to 2 Mbit/s for Plex Pass users).
https://support.plex.tv/articles/216766168-accessing-a-server-through-relay/

I think you misunderstood my statement or I phrased it incorrectly. It is not a Double NAT issue.

Think of the ONT box for Fiber service like the Cable Modem box for Cable Internet server

So my Orbi. which is the Wireless Router, is correctly configured for DHCP server as it needs to be.

My bad.
In that case you really need to check with your ISP. With the given symptoms it sounds like they might be blocking the port you’ve assigned for remote access.

Occasionally ISPs consider this kind of port filtering/blocking a security feature for their customers. Some are happy to unblock it for their customers on request… well… let’s not dip into “others are not” yet (fingers crossed!).

They did get back to me with an email regarding a Static IP and just to let them know when to pull the trigger. I’d like to hold off on that and actually talk with one of their IT/Network people and see if there is another solution.

tom80H, I appreciate you attempting to assist.

Here is the response I received back from GoNetSpeed regarding my issue. Looks like I will need to pay for a Static IP from them…

Hi Stephen,

No worries. I know we have a handful of customers who use Plex and their only solution was to get a static public IP assigned from us. Once applied the Plex service would work just fine.

Our default delivery uses Carrier Grade NAT. So your current public IP could also be shared by up to 30 other customers with different private IPs.

The problem is that Plex hosting doesn’t work in a double NAT topology and using bridge-mode (Plex’s recommendation) is not a fix for you either. I’ve added a link below on Plex troubleshooting, but I’m sure you’ve read this online somewhere already.

Let me know if you want to still troubleshoot or proceed with the static public IP.

check for any firewalls on by default for that new gateway.

Unsure how to check for firewalls on the ‘Gateway’. I know there are no firewalls active on the Netgear Orbi router.

The machine I have running Plex Server is a Macmini. There are no firewalls in play on there

Issue has now been resolved. Once GoNetSpeed set me up with a Static IP and I enter that info in my router, I was back up and running. Plex server is now accessible again outside of my home network via a direct, secure connection.

Thanks to all who tried to assist with a solution.

I am in exactly the same situation as you. I switched from Xfinity/Comcast to GoNetSpeed a few weeks ago and am now unable to get remote access to my Plex server. Can you tell me how much GoNetSpeed charges for a static IP? Is it a one-time fee or is it monthly?

$10 per month

I just went back to Gonetspeed. And just got my static IP. But still cannot connect remotely. I have port forward to 32400. But nothing happened for me. Turns green for a second, then dis connects. Did it take awhile? Here is what I am seeing. Any ideas

Check it with an actual device that’s outside your home network. Don’t rely on the status indicator.

You can e.g. just disable WIFI on any mobile device you’ve connected to Plex and try accessing your libraries.

And did you enter the new static IP, Subnet Mask, DNS etc info into your wireless router?

tom, thanks for reply. It does connect with insecure connection. But that is not supposed to be that way. When I had Gonetspeed before, I had connection. Green button on all the time as far as remote connection

Stepman. Yes I added ip and rest into router as I was told by tech guy at Gonetspeed. So internet works and I has friend check, he can get an insecure connection. But I should be able to connect. Does it take a day or so to get connection? I see that you posted same problem. How is it working now? I just got set up about 3 hours ago. Please let me know.
Thanks for any help

having an insecure connection is something you can configure in your settings.
