Help with enabling regular remote access

I am having issues enabling regular remote access so I can stream my content when I’m not at home. It seems that’s right now I have an indirect(relay) connection enabled so when I stream my content when I’m away, it’s in low quality.

I’m rather new to using plex and if I could get someone to help me out with this I would appreciate it!

What kind of router do you have at home?
Is your Plex server use a static IP address?

I have a google Wifi setup and am running 2 hubs.

I’m not sure if it’s static or not. What info do I need to look at to check?

first you need to set your plex server with a static IP.

https://kb.netgear.com/27476/How-do-I-set-a-static-IP-address-in-Windows

second does your google wifi connect direct to your ISP?

I have 2 WiFi hubs. The main one is in my living room where the internet connection is, and then the second one is in my office. My PC(which I use for my plex server) is in my office and connects to the google WiFi hub via Ethernet.

It’s a mesh system if you’re familiar with google WiFi. So simply put the main google WiFi hub is connected to my isp, and my second one is where I have my Pc connected via Ethernet.

Ok use this guide to set up a port forwarding

https://support.google.com/wifi/answer/6274503?hl=en

port 32400 going to your plex machine. TCP only IPV4

make sure your plex machine is static so it stays working after a reboot or dhcp expiration.

Ok I followed those steps to set up port forwarding. Then I went on plex in settings>remote server and enabled manually specify port and put in 32400.

Now I am getting a error on that page that says not available outside your network. And then a note says “you currently have remote access enabled through a manually specified port. If you need to disable remote access, you will need to remove your manual port forwarding from your router”

And then right below that it gives my private IP address with a green “left arrow”, and then my public IP address and then has a “red x” next to it.

check canyouseeme.org and specify port 32400 and see if t shows success.

make sure the IP reported on canyouseeme.org matches what is in your main google device connected to the internet.

What is the CPE used by the ISP to provide service? Is it a modem or an all in one gateway?

When I do that it gives my public IP address. When I type in port 32400 it says “cannot see service on IP address” and the reason it gives is connection refused.

So I’m guessing I may have set up port forwarding on my google WiFi incorrectly?

My ISP is a fiber isp. So there’s no router/modem they just hard wired a cat5 cable and said my router/main google WiFi hub needed to be plugged in there.

If you can’t probe the port from www.canyouseeme.org then either:

  1. The port forwarding is misconfigured
  2. You possibly have a software firewall on the host preventing access.

I tried to redo the port forwarding using the google WiFi instructions above. When I go to port management and then click the plus sign in the bottom right, in the ipv4 tab it gives a list of all my devices connected to my network. I scroll down and select my PC, but it gives my private IP address not my public. When I select it, it has me set the range for external and internal ports. Which I just put 32400 in the internal port and it automatically filled 32400 in the external port. Then I select tcp and then save it. Does this sound right?

What you just described sounds correct. Is the private IP address you selected the IP address assigned to the PMS host?

Yes, the IP address I selected when setting up port forwarding in my google WiFi app, is the same IP address that plex gives under settings>remote access, as my private IP address.

Does your public IP address match between canyouseeme and inside your WiFi gateway?

They should match…

When I go into the google WiFi app, I’m not seeing the public IP address anywhere. If I go into the WAN settings it give a IP address that’s different.

I’m not sure if this matters, but it says my WAN is setup as DHCP. Do I need to change that to static IP or PPPoE?

So yeah your WAN IP should match what canyouseeme shows.

If it doesn’t you are probably in a CGnat situation.
Depending on who your ISP is you can call them and see if they can provide you with a static public IP.

DHCP is the way it should be set up for now, call your ISP and see if they can assign you an IP.

CGnat is typically in this range 100.64.0.0/10 so if your WAN IP falls in that range you for sure have CGnat

My wan ip is like this 100.69.xxx.xxx so does that fall in that range?
