I only use Plex to develop xTeVe and if I want to listen to music on the go.
dunno guys, for me Emby isnāt that stable. I did go to the beta version to take advantage of the Gracenote integration and love the multiple EPG setup(particularly with Gracenote as one option, then use xteveās options as another).
Other than that⦠IPTV seems to stop streaming with Emby randomly and I need to restart Emby service for IPTV to start working again, the remote and casting features from various apps (IOS cast to appletv, or from webUI) is flakey. Seems less put together than Plex so far Iāve seen.
Any previous Plex converts willing to give me a different perspective? (I realize weāre on Plex forumsā¦)
I use and have both for years and also active in both forums.
Emby IPTV has a problem or two right now that does need fixing in the beta. The initial probes need a bit of adjustment as well as possibly hardware transcoding fix and itās being worked on. IPTV as well as DVR/LiveTV is getting a rewrite/upgrade in an upcoming beta so all these features will the the āCoreā for that release. Itās also going to be enhanced and will even be able to natively do IPTV to other tuners such as NextPVR, etc. I have this working right now with the glitch you mentioned that needs fixing.
What is cool about being able to use other software like NextPVR but controlled by Emby is that NextPVR essentially is just a middleware to the tuner. This allows far more devices to be used while all grid/epg/scheduling is done in Emby. It also allows the use of Multi-Rec. Multi-Rec is a way of recording all channels (main and subs) on a transpoder for OTA. So for example in my area (Philadelphia) I have this:
2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6
3.1, 3.2
4.1, 4.3
6.1, 6.2, 6.3
10.1, 10,2
12.1, 12.2, 12.3
17.1, 17.2, 17.3, 17.4
23.1, 23.2
29.1, 29.2, 29.3, 29.4
etc
So any station on the same line as above would only requite one tuner. So on my HDHomeRun Quatro I could record: 10.1, 10,2, 12.1, 12.2, 12.3, 17.1, 17.2, 17.3, 17.429.1, 29.2, 29.3, 29.4 all at the same time with only 4 tuners. Thatās a pretty powerful feature.
Some people experience no problems with IPTV. Iām one of the people who can cause the server to get jammed and need to be restarted as you describe. I can produce logs for the dev team at will for this.
Casting is drastically different between Plex and Emby. Plex will cast to other Plex clients if they are a receiver or to special devices that talk Chromecast. Emby can cast to far more devices, clients and TVs and even DLNA devices. You can for example make use of the old WD Live devices and use them like a 1080p chromecast with Emby and cast to them. However because Emby can use so many different devices the discovery process is longer. If you have you devices and up and running things will work great. If you start/stop devices or have any network glitches you may not see the devices all the time as they need to get rediscovered. This is very similar to Windows File Manager when you refresh the network and see devices pop up a minute or so later. A lot depends on how often devices advertise themselves and/or if you block any of these message on your network or use any router that downgrades these messages.
Typically when you dig down into Emby features they have more options and settings that you the admin can use to trick out your system and tune it. If youāre running the beta try comparing some features that matter for performance like Transcoding settings and explore hardware options. Compare everyday management features like user controls. In Emby you can control access to everything. You can allows users to sync, download, DVR, Live TV, change passwords, login locally or remotely, set a max bandwidth they can use, give them access to transcode or not to transcode. Allow them to upload pictures/camera/video or not.
When you install a plugin, you can allow or deny users access to it, etc
Do you have any reliable provider for EPG?
For EPG I use zap2xml. Itās free and I have as many days of EPG as I want. It creates an xmltv file nightly through a cron job. All my media stuff and programs are on my Ubuntu Server.
I use multiple Zap2xml accounts so I can pull from multiple guides. And make use of favorites channel within that so I only pull what is needed and donāt overwhelm myself in xteve with channels.
Xteve is really nice to organize things for Plex live. If it could map channels by name or wildcard then it would be helpful
Hope you can help. I am very new, and not overly technical. Running xTeVe on a Qnap TS-251 Celeron, and supplying a vaderstreams info for the PMS also on the Qnap. Set up went well in XTeVe, Plex seeās the tuner, updates the guide but when selecting a show/channel it gives the error that it cannot tune.
I believe vader supplies an m3u8 ⦠is this a problem for plex? (thought I read that somewhere else)
Not sure where to go next to troubleshoot⦠any help/advice is appreciated for this Noob.

Plex does not support M3U8 streams.
For many providers, you can change the format in the M3U URL.
http://ā¦&output=ts
or
http://ā¦&format=ts
As described above, I am very satisfied with Schedules Direct. EPG data for 4 locations.
Thanks⦠I will give it a try. Assuming this is the format change you mean to tack it to the end
ā¦vaders.tv/vget?username=XXXXX&password=XXXX&ouput=ts
For your stream, change the output from m3u8 to ts. Itās part of the link they give you. Thatās what worked for my provider, for xteve and Plex
Canāt help with the rest.
Yes I heard thatās pretty good, but because this is an experiment Iām staying super cheap with all this. I only spend $5 a month on my provider. I just wish these providers were much better, so I have to stay on cable to keep the wife and family happy.
Thanks. added the &format=ts, confirmed with Vader it should work. But still getting no love from Plex on the scan⦠it sees the HDHomeRun xTeVe⦠but no channels.
Assuming that setting xTeVe to use the Plex EPG is āsafestā to get it up and running initially.?
You have too many streams, you have to use the filter first.
Plex only supports about 480 streams
It is never good to run programs as root if they do not need root privileges
Ok. Ill filter it down more is there a reference for all the abbreviations?
Thanks for the help!
There are no abbreviations, the keywords are the contents of your M3U file.
If there is a group of sports in the M3U, then you put in the filter sports. With the curly brackets you can specify further conditions.
Example: All channels from the group Sports that contain the letters HD
Sport {HD}
Every time you save a filter, you can specify another one.
In the Discord channel I have written a guide to the filter.
Little hint: Click on the blue triangle.
Got It⦠Beautiful!
That will make it super easy.
cool @cayars thanks for the overview. I have a relatively simpler setup with one m3u IPTV provider (2 streams) but have to organize the thousand channels⦠and emby stops playing all the time and have to restart the service. Iām ideally looking for an emersive guide experience that has all the shows and movies graphics⦠I get the impression that Gracenote is the best at this⦠SchedulesDirect might be good with EPG but less on the graphics and metadata⦠would that be accurate?
