I have been using Plex now for 5 years. Apple TV is the player and my server is my MacBook Pro. All software is the latest version. All my content direct plays. Since last week, no matter what I watch; it could be a 30 min, 45 min, 1 hour show, or 2 hour movie, when it gets to the last 4.5 minutes…the player disconnects and the error pops up saying the connection to the server was lost.
I’ll watch the same files on Infuse Pro on my Apple TV and have zero issues.
Server Version#: 1.20.3.3437
Player Version#: 7.7plex log file.txt (1.8 MB)
I thought I’d give it one last shot and maybe install the previous version of PMS for MacOS, thinking maybe this latest version is causing problems. Apparently there is no simple way to just download a previous version of PMS…awesome stuff. Oh well…
Well wouldnt you know it…I downgraded to a prior version of PMS and it fixed my problem. Big thank you @buffyandsneaky for showing me that link. I noticed they released a new version of PMS today…needless to say, I wont be downloading it.
This method of third parties, is definitely not recommended. Past versions are already on your Mac. Navigating to Go menu holding down option key you will find this folder called Updates.
Copy and move to desktop and unpack zip, swap over folder called contents with your current Plex Server application contents folder. Clue, Right click show package contents.
Make sure your PMS is not running during this operation.
Start up PMS and there you have it, you have rolled back
My guess, they want to see the problems in forums so they can fix them. If everyone just rolled back straight away, progress of new features and fixes would be very slow. So thats was there a back door if you like.
Well, I continued to remain on my older version of plex during all this time because of the issue I mentioned up top. Today, the plex app wouldnt open, so I bit the bullet and upgraded to the newest release. Wouldnt you know it? The problem is back: it gets to the last 4.5 minutes…the player disconnects and the error pops up saying the connection to the server was lost.
I may just put myself out of this misery and go full on with Infuse Pro.
Hi — I’m running into a similar issue after using Plex for around 5 years.
My system is iMac running Big Sur, fully wired gigabit network, latest version of Plex Media Server, using Apple TV’s.
After the last update I initially had an issue where the server was running but on my desktop browser I kept getting “server settings unavailable” … I downloaded the latest version onto my Mac and that fixed it … but now I’m randomly getting this “your connection to the server has been lost” error while watching on my Apple TV. Once this happens my library gets “grayed out” with that circle with a line through it. To get the server up and running I have to go to my desktop and as soon as I open up Plex on my browser I’m back in business. I tried leaving the browser window open, I’ve tried “auto easy refresh” in Chrome, but still this error occurs. It’s very frustrating and will be especially if I am away from home and trying to watch and the server goes down …
I’ve looked to rollback my version of PMS as suggested above but once I get to the “Application Support” folder there is no “Plex Media Server” folder…
Could someone PM me and possibly email a previous version … maybe something from November / December?
I rolled back to the release from august 27 and it works again. This is such a PITA. I did sign up for infuse pro for one month, it works like a charm. I will probably stay on the august 27 plex release for as long as I can. if Plex still doesnt fix the issue, I am done and switching to infuse pro.
So not to jump the gun here but I went back to the August 27th, 2020 version of Plex server and I’ve had over 4 hours of play with no “your connection to the server has been lost” errors … so crossing my fingers here but it looks like it works…
I do suspect it’s the latest version of the server in my case that’s causing the issues because prior to that one I had never encountered this error.
Yeah there is definitely a bug with mac server to apple tv. I dont think they care, I am going to stay on the last server build which works for me which is the one from 8/27.
I dont. I would have to upgrade to the latest version of PMS to recreate the issue, and I’d rather not go through that hassle again. Staying on an old version of PMS is working fine for me now.
