Server Version#: 1.18.5.2309
Player Version#:
[Plex Media Server
Running on Synology NAS DS218+
Main router is an ASUS router with two other Asus router running in AP mode or AImesh (both wired) I don’t think I’m in a double NAT config.
Started around the same time upgraded to Server Version 1.21.1.3876. I tried going back to 1.18.5.2309 (left it there) but that didn’t fix the problem either.
I’ve tried everything on the page
and haven’t gotten anywhere. Sometimes it’s be “green” for 2-3 seconds then fail. Sometimes it stays green for hours then fails randomly
I’ve always just used the uPnP and it’s always worked. I did setup a Port Fwd using 32400 after the problem started and I see the port is open on https://canyouseeme.org/
Port Forwarding List (Max Limit : 64)
Service Name External Port Internal Port Internal IP Address Protocol Source IP
Plex 32400 32400 192.168.50.109 TCP
I’ve shut everything down multiple times, logged off and on. Same issue.
The Plex/Web display of Green vs Red has always been touchy.
There is a bit of a race condition in how it works.
Even on my machine, which has Remote Access always available, it will show as red (not available) until I hover the mouse over it on the left column or go into the Remote Access page – then it goes back to green.
Have you checked for access on the external port with Canyouseeme.org ?
However I know the remote is going in and out.
Family members that access my plex library via remote sharing have been having problems accessing my library for the last week or so. Same with my phone when I’m not on my network.
I saw the problem first hand… my library would come up and go away in a matter of a few minutes.
Yes to both… I have manually assigned an IP address and the box it checked.
Before problem started I never had to use port forwarding though… It always worked fine.
Take a look at Uptime Robot. It will check reachability to your Plex server every 5 minutes and send you an e-mail if it loses contact (it is like canyouseeme.org that repeats every 5 minutes). The free account works fine for Plex servers.
It might help show a pattern to the remote access outages.
The AI mesh should not be a problem. I’ve two RT-AC68 routers, one as an AI mesh device with Ethernet backhaul. I’ve never had issues with the TV, streaming boxes, etc connected via mesh. My DS918+ running PMS is connected to the primary router.
You might try power cycling your Internet access device (cable modem, etc) and the ASUS routers. It will force the access device to re-register with your ISP and clear/re-populate ARP, etc caches in the routers. Let the access device fully come online before returning power to the ASUS routers.
It shows port 32400 as up as okay, yet Plex still shows the remote server as “Your server is signed in to Plex, but is not reachable from outside your network”
Just checked my server from 3 outside sources and two of them are seeing my library but seeing them indirect ( I believe using the plex relay)
@ChuckPa
The remote server started working randomly a little while ago. I had someone start playing a movie outside my network and it played “remote” and not indirect.
Not sure if another log will help but I figure it cant hurt.
Both uptimeRobot and canyouseeme.org/ show port 32400 as open the entire time.
@FordGuy61
Took your suggestions shut the whole network down. .
Started things up one by one till just the modem, router, NAS and laptop were running.
Got plex to sign in to remote via UPnP and left it that way.
It failed about 30 minutes later.
Did the whole thing again, except used manual port with port forwarding.
Pretty much the same things.
Uptime Robot test to your public IP address and manual port. It shows your server is reachable, so that indicates your server config and router config are working correctly. Also, that your server is reachable from Internet.
What Uptime Robot does not test is your server registering with the servers at Plex, so it can be found by remote clients. I can see the registration changing in the log file (up/down), but I cannot tell if it is the registration failing or you testing things (a comment on my log reading skills, or lack thereof).
The only other suggestion I have is to upgrade to the latest release instead of staying on 1.18.5.2309, which is a year old (released Jan 2020).
Plex made changes in the 1.19.x releases (April/May/June 2020) which improve the reliability of the status indicator on the Settings -> Remote Access page.
The Plex Media Server would time out when trying to contact the hosts at plex.tv. As a result, the Remote Access settings page shows service as unavailable when it is still available. Plex made changes to PMS and on the back end servers to remedy the situation.
@FordGuy61
Thanks for taking the time to read my logs and help me figure this out.
I’m thinking about this and wondering how well remote access has ever really worked on my setup. I don’t use it much and the people that I’ve given access to aren’t really tech savy and I usually blame issues on them. LOL. That’s my bad. I’d really like to get it working. I’ve only been a plex user for a few months.
I upgraded back to the latest release and shut down PMS to try and get some more useful logs.
21:19- started PMS back up
21:20- Server showed not available. I tried to connect using UPnP (router was set for it) and it connected at first. I tried to access my library remote and it died right away. Not sure it was ever really even connected. Tried to reconnect a few times with no dice. Usually would connect for a second or two and then turn red. I can see in my router logs that the UPnP worked and opened port 14642 to port 32400.
21:23- Tried to connect using port FWD ( turned off UPnP in router and setup port 32400 to port 32400) same thing. Would turn green for a second or two and then fail. .
Here’s the logs. Not sure if the latest release gives any more information in the logs.
I did see this in the log a few times.
CERT: incomplete TLS handshake: stream truncated
I had read a few threads from a couple of months ago where people were having CERT issues and @ChuckPa had to reset a few peoples certificates.
Just was curious if this was possible something similar and the CERT warning caught my eye… again just curious.
Any other ideas?
I updated to the latest PMS 1.21.2.3939 and it didn’t help.
Still same issue… works something… most of the time it doesn’t work
Also tried the DNS rebinding fix and it didn’t help either…
I don’t believe I have a UPNP/port forwarding issue as everything shows my ports as correctly setup and functioning.
I ran the UptimeRobot as previously suggested and everything looked fine. plus all the canyouseeme.org tests also show the port as open.
I use a few other the Synolgy apps (DS video, DS audio) and have never had a problem with it. I’d assume that had to use some port of UPnP/port forwarding rules as well.
The only reason I mentioned the cert issues was because I saw this thread dealing with certs. I know it’s dealing with linux and not NAS but I’m grasping at straws trying to get this to work.
and I saw this line in my logs
CERT: incomplete TLS handshake: stream truncated
