What is the best (ie. easiest to use, and is reasonably current on updates) external method to edit metadata that is contained in in Plex Media Server’s database?
I know of PlexEditor for Windows, but it is basically defunct and only edits a single Movie library.
What particular metadata do you want to change?
I have found I can delete /amend the TITLE info for mp4 (only) by using mp3tag
it’s not Plex metadata, but you can have plex use the data from an NFO. I use Ember Media Manager, it’s excellent.

I guess you guys can’t read:

The OP is referring to the metadata stored by Plex, not file metadata that is stored as tags in a file or as text in a file.
I guess I should not try to help…

My point was to not use plex metadata as its a pain the ass to update and if the OP ever decides to move on from Plex they now have properly formatted metadata to use that could be moved into any of the other big 2 softwares on the market.
Also, his post was “external method to edit metadata that is contained in Plex Media Server’s database?” and since there is NO external method other than directly playing in the DB, which goes against his “easiest” comment, an EXTERNAL method to create his own metadata for Plex to use makes the most sense.
hmm. Well, darn. Yes, manually updating metadata in Plex for a significant number of items is cumbersome. Maybe I’ll look into creating NFOs for my stuff.
…I didn’t know Plex made use of NFOs from Local Media Assets.

You need to install the XBMCnfoMoviesImporter.bundle and/or XBMCnfoTVImporter.bundle in order to import the .nfo files.
GitHub - gboudreau/XBMCnfoMoviesImporter.bundle
GitHub - gboudreau/XBMCnfoTVImporter.bundle
You can also add custom posters and backgrounds etc. to your media folders. See the link in my signature regarding File Naming in Plex, then check Local Media Assets - Movies & Local Media Assets - TV Shows for more details on doing that.
Do you need those plugins to get some data from the nfos? Mine reads them without issue, I know it only looks at like 5-10 fields but it definitely uses the NFO data just using Local Assets does it not?
