[Feature Request] [PMS] Edit metadata built-in to files

One of the main reasons I use Plex is that my media is permanent – Netflix or Spotify might remove content as licensing agreements expire, but I will never lose any of the content I put on my Plex server. However, in the back of my head, I am a little bit worried, because I know that, if Plex ever stopped existing, or if I had to clean reinstall PMS, or any other issue like that cropped up, I’d be in a bit of a bind. While I’d still have all my media files, all the metadata that Plex maintains is kept only inside Plex, so I’d be looking at hours of fixing all the metadata in my files.

I know that as a policy, Plex doesn’t like to touch your media files, but perhaps as an opt-in feature, Plex could just modify the metadata on the files every time you modify the metadata in Plex. I don’t intend to stop using Plex, but I’d still like the freedom to do so; ya know what I mean?

Yeah, Plex pretty much locks you in that way.
I am using https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/38402/metadata-agents-for-exported-xbmc-library and keeping pretty much all of my meta-data in nfo files. This also helps me when I need to use Emby when a Plex update breaks the streaming/encoding/transcoding again.
Not nearly as nice to edit, but more future-proof.
Maybe some time down the road there will be an nfo exporter for Plex.

Early 2021 clean-up: aside of Plex’ long-standing position not to touch/change local files, this is a duplicate
