PLEX-Update breaks MKV-Playback?

The last PLEX-Pass-Update (1.4.2.3400) breaks the playback of mkv-files on my PMS. I have it running in a VM of El Capitan, files stored on a NAS (Synology). Everything was working just fine, till the update.

example:
I can not play movie “xy.mkv” with the latest update (1.4.2.3400), but when I revert PLEX to Version “1.3.4.3285”, the exact same file plays again, without any problems …

For now I keep automatic update-download disabled.

*** problem solved! latest 1.5.x Update fixed the issue for me ***

Not heard of that issue before. Any particular client that causes it or is it all clients? Is it transcoding on the affending client or not? Please also - https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201643703-Reporting-issues-with-Plex-Media-Server - follow those instructions after a reboot + recreating the issue.

I’m having same issue. I have a synology and a Windows PMS running latest version and the Windows PMS say’s it’s unavailable while the Synology will play it after a longer than normal loading time. Both are accessing the same files.

I am not having the problem. I am running it on osx. All my stuff is mkv and I have seen 3 people playing mkv

Well, I tried to play different mkv’s after updating to the latest PLEX-PASS (v 1.4.2.3400), some would just not play anymore … The error said “es konnte keine playback-sitzung für diesen Titel erstellt werden (No playback session could be created for this title)” and something about wrong Metadata(?).

But once I reverted PLEX to the previous version (v 1.3.4.3285), the exact same mkv’s that threw errors before played flawlessly … I tried to play the files remotely via AppleTV(newest version), iPad, Computer. And locally over the Web-Interface. Same results everywhere.

I am using PLEX for like 6 years now & never had this issue before either.
Luckily I can just revert my OS-X System to a previous snapshot & have it working again.
But of course I prefer being able to update without PLEX stopping to work.

Yes, for sure, I would also prefer if you (and Westlam) would be able to update and play MKV files as it has worked before. Sadly, I can’t do much without logs capturing the failed play attempt. What I can tell is that it is all Mac-stuff so I might not be the best suited to solve this but I’ll find someone who is if that should be the case. Since it is Mac, I know it does not support MKV and will have to at least remux, so the transcoder sort-of comes into play at the minimum. Logs would show more.

well thanks Peter, I’m gonna wait for the next update, try again & then send logs before reverting to the working version of PLEX, if this bug keeps occurring.

I think part of the problem here is that MKV is just a wrapper, so saying some MKV’s play while other don’t is a little misleading. For what it’s worth, I keep all my files in that format, usually h.264 4.1 video, but a range of audio compressions. Between the 2 servers I run, there were 3 separate streams going last night. Two of them to Ipads and the third transcoded to the older Sony app. No playback issues for us.

same issue here. playback of an mkv works fine on 1.3.4.3285 but not on 1.4.2.3400. 1.3.4 is the version i upgraded to 1.4.2, so i just rolled back to it on my qnap. Here’s the particular movie i was having issues with

Running Plex Version 1.5.5.3634 now, and the MKV-issues are gone.

Issue is back again :#

and issue is back again PLEX version 1.9.2.4285.
just can’t be possible, that i need to change all the mkv’s with handbrake … hope the next update will fix it again …
