Ability to forbid Plex playback/transcoding when recording content?

My plex DVR consists of an Nvidia SHIELD and a Happauge Win-TV Dual-USB. It can record with no issues, but if I try to play something back at any point in the recording process, the recording doesn’t save and neither does any future recordings until I manually restart the SHIELD. I can keep my family from touching the SHIELD while recording, but I also have out-of-house relatives who I’ve shared my Plex account with, and I’m worried that they may unknowingly screw up the recording when trying to watch something. So I’d like to set my server so that while the SHIELD is recording, nobody can play anything, as a sort of safety precaution to keep things from not successfully recording.

Not aware of any way to prevent other users from playing a show/movie while something is recording. If there was a way to setup Dropbox and the Shield that would be ideal. You could setup your Dropbox account on the shield to drop recordings into a folder sync’d with Dropbox, the recordings could then be uploaded to Dropbox. Setup the Dropbox folder in your Plex Cloud server and share that with everyone. They are then using a Plex Cloud server for viewing and possibly not affecting your Shield recordings. I have no clue if this is even possible as I do not own a Shield.

I don’t think that the Shield is powerful enough to both record and playback simultaneously with current software versions. That’s not to say that it can’t be fixed with more efficient versions at the OS or app levels.

Unfortunately, that means that I have had to move my Plex DVR/server functionality off the Shield back to an Intel PC platform.

The Plex Cloud/Dropbox option might work for your remote users, but you’ll still have to keep the family away from the Shield during recording.

I have 2 shield pro units, one of which I had the server software installed on for a while. I quickly switched it back to my main PC due to the lack of processing power for multiple streams and still be able to use the device.
