0.4.0 rc3 HDMI 5.1 audio issue

So just installed rasplex via the windows sd card creator, version 0.4.0 rc3. Plays fine different mkv files but only in 2.0.

Audio output settings:

Channels 5.1

Output: HDMI

No difference from setting DTS/DD capable receiver. Still downmix to 2.0

Codec info in the attached file.

I too started having this same issue after updating to 0.4.0rc1. Has not been resolved with any updates since then.

Are you routing your audio via the TV?  On some systems that can lead to the TV decoding the audio and passing on 2.0 output to the receiver.

No, HDMI directly to the receiver.

So I did some more testing, changed the hdmi cable switched from passthrough to dts/ac3/DD capable receiver and so on. Tried playing different files some with DD some with DTS.

And my receiver did some really weird stuff. Let me say that it does this on different pi´s different HDMI cables and with different videofiles. However I have no problems with Chromecast. (maybe because it's transcoded from the server I don't know.)

So I made some videos because I have never seen stuff like this before.

Video files can be seen here: http://tovarisj.com/upload/Rasplex/

did you enable DTS / AC3 passthrough at least ? 5.1 is supposed to work fine in rc3.

Yes, I did, at least if that means setting the settings to DTS/DD capable receiver. However I tried it both ways first video the lpcm video is with "dts/dd capable receiver" unmarked/off if you like, I have not found any specific passthrough settings. The last two is with me playing two different video files one in DTS and the other one in DD with the settings "dts/DD capable receiver" turned on.

The surround channels setting was set to 5.1 in all cases. Stereo videofiles plays without any trouble.

so are you meanning that any 5.1 content will play in stereo or is it only that specific media ?

My experience has been that ANY content, whether DD or DTS, only plays back as stereo through my receiver.

That was the case, but yesterday I succeeded with one file to get it in surround, but most of my files I have no luck in surround. (but no issues on chromecast)

Tonight I tried to watch the new episode of GoT and the first few minutes "the last time stuff" played in stereo but when I got to the theme song the video got all pixellated but recovered but after that no sound, plex said it was only in stereo but maybe it is just the first few minutes in stereo and then surround, I don't know if thats even possible in a mkv container. :-/ I'm baffled.....

maybe it is just the first few minutes in stereo and then surround

That's exactly what is happening. Raspbmc used to have the same problem but they fixed it. They also used not to be able to output multi-channel PCM but they fixed that too. If these fixes were included in Rasplex it would be great.

Can you file a bug on github and get me some details about that ? evetually a sample to test with ?

Thanks.

If you look at the screen capture in the first post you will notice that the audio codec is A52 (similar but not the same as AC3), Rasplex treats this codec the same as AAC5.1, that is, it will always encode to stereo, I believe there are no amps that support A52, therefore, enabling passthrough will have no effect, it will still play as stereo, the same problem used to be present in XBMC but as I have not used this for a couple of years I'm not aware that they have fixed it.
