1.7.6 Amazon/Roku woes

Phooey. I thought I had my previous issues resolved with the new release. Not so. In fact… very not so. Roku: Buffering constantly. Starts out playing fine, then a buffering, then fine for a while. Then buffering… and another… and another. Might be able to live with this because the picture quality is good. Streaming video was 1080p HD (Salvation) over wifi. Still have to try the wired Roku.

Amazon Fire TV: Horrible. No buffering over wired connection but severe interlacing on moving subjects. This is more likely a problem with the FireTV and not the DVR playback. TV is 4K LED Samsung. Firestick: No buffering but screen flickers. No discernible interlacing but the flickering is almost as annoying. Wireless connection. This is way more tolerable than the interlacing artifacts.

The winner is: The Plex app on my Samsung TV. Great UI (not the same as the Fire and Roku devices – much better). Incredible picture quality. No artifacts at all.

What can I expect if I get an Apple TV box? Smooth or interface lines or flickering or buffering or nothing odd at all? I’m willing to spring for the 4th gen, 32GB device.

Apologies for inferring that the Plex DVR is the culprit for all of the maladies mentioned. I’m just explaining that the DVR experience is heavily dependent on everything. Wish I knew what the optimal combination was. Seems like the Samsung TV is the best streaming device, but the price is a bit prohibitive to have a smart one in every room.

Ack! The wired Roku 3 buffered a few times, screen went black, and program started over again. WTF? After the restart, it played fine for quite a while then started buffering again. It got farther than the first attempt. Oops. Restarted as I was typing this. Not really sure what is going on. Logs only cover the first restart.

Logs attached. Start looking around 2245 EDT or so.

I also am finding that after upgrading to 1.7.6 I don’t seem to be able to play much of anything reliably on the Roku. The last release had some issues, but this is mostly broken. Even videos that were recorded and would play well on 1.7.5 don’t seem to play on the Roku - I can play some of them through the web, but this definitely is looking like a step in the wrong direction. I have not yet had a chance to look at the logs but I think I’m going to have to revert back - I’ve come to rely on the system and it has just been getting flakier and flakier with each release lately.

I’m ‘taping’ Wimbledon this weekend, so I’ll refrain from changing anything for a couple of days. After that, back to 1.6.1.

Same issue here. I ended up having to tune the quality WAAAAAY down, which is an unacceptable workaround.

This isn’t just for DVR, this is for anything.

Devs, take a gander at my specs in my sig…that should take any question of hardware/network throughput out of the equation. DRS/HA in my environment shouldn’t make a difference, as no migrations have occurred during tested periods of slowness.

Any word on this…
I need to study this more… After the update, my recordings don’t play on the Roku.
I am extracting the subtitles from the TS then remuxing to MKV… Is there something I can do in this process to fix this

hhhmmmmm
never mind
I refreshed the metadata and it is working just fine…
