Hello All, This has started a few months ago. I cant sort out why, but certain content causes my cpu to use 100%. I have sorted out whenever I use subtitles it always jumps to 100% but sometimes foreign content without subtitles causes plex to use 100%. I have tried upgrading versions, downgrading versions, tweaking transcoding to fastest and it always uses 100% for certain content, please help!
Some clients (in my experience particularly LG webOS TVs) can’t display bitmap/PGS subtitles over video and they have to be burned in at the server, which involved re-encoding the video stream (and, hence, very high CPU use). Text/SRT subtitles tend to work much better.
Hello Gary,
So to remedy this I should pull subtitle files/srts to the directory via something like sub zero and that will cause this to stop? Thanks in advance.
PMS actually has a subtitle search facility built in, but sub zero would certainly do the trick, too. You just need to ensure you have the correct type of subtitle selected before playback.
FYI, depending on how you source your movies: those of type “remux” tend to only contain bitmap/PGS subtitles, whereas movies that have been re-encoded usually have SRT subtitles.
Thanks for this, last question…If I used another client like a Nvidia shield tv or roku would the cpu usage possibly drop?
For the Plex app on LG WebOS TVs, enabling PGS or VOBSUB subititles results in video transcoding. SRT subititles will direct play. However, if the audio is transcoding, enabling subititles results in video transcoding.
Basically, avoid TrueHD audio, as it is not supported by the TV. AAC/AC3/EAC3 (+ Atmos)/dts/dts-HD MA audio will direct play. When playing dts-HD MA 5.1/7.1, the Plex app only uses the dts 5.1 core audio. The -HD MA part is discarded.
On Android TV devices, transcoded audio + subtitles results in transcoded video (see post below).
Thanks for breaking this down, this turned out to be a bit more complicated than I thought it would be. I am going to come up with a solution that will hopefully allow direct play for my foreign audio (subtitled) media. thanks again!
Here’s my setup:
Shield TV <–> Denon AVR <–> LG OLED
This direct plays pretty much everything I toss at it.
The Denon supports all the audio codecs found on DVDs & Blu-ray discs, so the audio always direct plays. A Sony/Yamaha/etc AVR would work as well, as long as it supports the correct codecs.
For HDR video, the Shield only supports HDR10, so no Dolby Vision, HLG, or other HDR formats.
Since the audio & video both direct play, I can enable PGS, VOBSUB, & SRT subtitles and things still direct play.
Also take a look at the AppleTV 4K and the 4K capable Rokus. I’ve no hands on with either, but others seem very happy with them.
The AppleTV 4K supports HDR10 & Dolby Vision, but does not passthrough TrueHD. However, it decodes it to PCM on the box, so your Plex Server still direct plays the audio.
Unsure how either handle subtitles. You can search for forum. Others may chime in with their experience.
Basically, there’s no perfect Plex client. The Shield has the audio support, but is HDR10 only. The ATV4K adds Dolby Vision support, but is lacking on the audio side. The SmartTV apps support whatever HDR is supported by the TV itself, but have very limited subtitle and limited audio support.
Great thanks, I have a roku 4k that I use in my attic, and an Nvidia shield tv that I use in my bedroom (this would explain why sometimes I don’t use 100%). I do have an Onkyo receiver/system that I never setup since I was fine with the LGTV speakers. I can set that up, the problem is having to purchase yet another box, which I would probably get another shield tv.
