Subtitle problems LG Web OS

Plex Server: Synology 1019+
Plex Player : 5.0.0 (23/03/2021)
LG TV: LM6300PLA
LG web OS: 05.00.03

Since a few days we have increased CPU activity on the server when viewing content with subtitles. Without subtitles the CPU maxes out at 10%, with subtitles at 99% not going below 95%. What can I do to change this flux in CPU power because playback is not fluent with subtitles on.

Thanks for the help.

Avoid image based subtitles (vobsub or pgs) and use only .srt subtitles.

LG app is kinda useless if you try to play any content with subtitles that cannot be direct played. Lg requires to burn in any form of subtitles if audio, video transcoding is needed and sadly your NAS does not have powerful CPU to burn in subtitles.

Your options are: 1) direct play, 2) buy a new NAS with more powerful CPU and enjoy higher power consumption, 3) buy a capable streaming device, 4) Emby

Hi premikkoci,

Thank you for the advice. Maybe some more information was needed from my side: The subtitles are embedded in the mkv file (srt) and a week ago everyhing was working fine, now it keep churning the CPU to the max.

Is the audio transcoding?

With the Plex LG app, if the audio is transcoding, enabling any form of subtitle results in a video transcode.

Also, is the TV HD, not UHD? (specs at flatpanelshd) If so, it is not officially supported by Plex. From the LG section of Which Smart TV models are supported?, “No 720p or 1080p (“full HD”) sets are supported for our current app at this time.”

You might consider getting a Amazon FireStick, Roku, AppleTV, Nvidia Shield, etc. Since version 8.0.0, Android TV devices direct play subtitles even if the video or audio is transcoding. I’m not sure how Roku or AppleTV handle subtitles, but probably much better than the Plex SmartTV apps, which are limited at best.

Hi FordGuy61,

Thanks for the quick and informative reply. The TV is HD and I think there must be audiotranscoding as the file has 5.1 audio and the TV only has 2.0 speakers. I will try to change the format of the streams in the mkv, maybe that can help?
As for the app not being supported, it is strange that it is available to download and install from the LG app menu?

Again thanks for the reply!!

You can monitor playback via Plex Dashboard → Now Playing to see if the video or audio is transcoding.

The LG website lists multiple supported audio codecs, including AC3, EAC3, dts, and dts-HD. TrueHD will definitely be transcoded. However, I’m not sure what you can expect to direct play, since the TV is not officially supported (so doubtful Plex does any testing on HD TVs).

No idea why the app can be downloaded to HD sets. I’ve never seen that discussed on the forum.
