100% cpu usage when first using Plex

Hi - I’ve been a happy Plex lifetime user for many years to stream video content to Various iOS devices. I have a dell laptop (skylake cpu, 16gb ram so plenty of oomph) running the server 24/7.

Recently (last couple of months) Plex has been very slow when you start it up on a device, eg Apple TV. Menus slow, thumbnails very slow to render. Takes several goes and a few minutes to get anything playing. After that it’s fine.

On investigation I can see that when any Plex client is triggered - including the web client on the laptop - the cpu usage is 100% for around 5 minutes. It’s the ‘Plex media server (32 bit)’ process that’s doing it, the transcoder doesn’t appear. Which is correct as I direct stream all content. After 5 minutes or so the cpu drops to < 5%.

I have no idea what it’s doing. Tried updating server and clients to latest version - no joy. My library is pretty stable - haven’t added any new content for a few weeks.

It’s really annoying as now, when we start Plex, we need to go and make a cup of tea first and only then does it become usable.

Any suggestions?
