Inexplicable periodic 100% PMS CPU usage - Not transcoder

Server Version#: Version 1.19.1.2645
Player Version#: N/A

Hello!

My plex server has been behaving unusually the last couple days and I’m struggling to undestand why. For reference my server has been up and running for almost a year now without so much as a hiccup. I’m running PMS on a little mini-itx server powered by an i7-6700k. I don’t have any 4k media, and transcoding has never really put any strain in the CPU. I’ve had up to 10 users streaming at the same time, most hw transcoding without topping 50% CPU usage.

A couple days ago however I could hear my server, which is mostly silent, revving up hard. From the plex dashboard I could see the CPU usage was at 100%. This has happened a couple times since and just now it happened again while only a single user was streaming, so I decided to take a closer look.

The Plex Media process was inexplicably eating up my CPU:

After about 10 minutes it dropped back down to the normal baseline of <10% usage.

To my knowledge nothing has changed in my setup, I haven’t updated anything or made any alterations to my configuration what so ever. Has anybody else experienced this? It’s not a major issue but I can’t figure out what’s going on and it bothers me.

Log files please before they scroll off the back end?

(It’s been 6 hours so unlikely to still be in your logs).

My bad, I did collect logs shortly after the issue happened but forgot to attach them:

  1. I see normal playback activity. Some with transcoding and some without to the Tizen, Plex/Web (browser), and XBox players. I do see some subtitle burning. Burning subtitles might require a full core of the CPU.

  2. Around 00:30, I see media scanning activity.

Scanning completes, playback continues.

When you state “100%” , how is that measured?

If measured in “top”, you’re using 1 full core. (800% = 8 cores @ 100%)

Can you clarify?

This was measured from the Plex dashboard and Top as shown in the image in my initial post. On the dashboard CPU monitor both the Plex Media Server (green) and System (red) lines were at 100% for a sustained period.

Top showed the Plex Media process at 723 %CPU, so not quite all 8 cores at 100% but very close. The Plex Trans process was at 8%.

The next time that happens, please immediately grab the log files and attach them.
