2 DIfferent Shows Merged together in Plex Datebase

There are two shows with the same title (aired almost two decades apart) that the Plex library has merged together as one.

Marriage of Inconvenience (2023) imdb tt12368998
Marriage of Inconvenience (2007) - Chinese series

The Chinese series is not listed on IMDB, but both are on TMDB, and Plex has pulled metadata (cast, artwork, and episodes) from the 20-episode 2007 series and merged it with the 6-episode 2023 series. Fixing the match is useless because it thinks they are one series.

I have the 2023 series and can override the posters and episode description metadata locally, but the entire cast is from the 2007 Chinese series.

Sounds like a job for the plex metadata team. @BigWheel you got any idea?

I had this experience this issue too.

Both versions are listed in the Plex TV database.

You have to SPLIT the series into two and then manually (re)select - and choose the 2023 series - ignore the poster listed in the Plex database - someone entered the wrong poster (you can manually select the proper poster later - it’s offered as an alternative).

Annoying, but it works.

I tried looking for the 2023 (english) version of the show on Plex metadata service. If it isn’t there, it’s unlikely that a Plex service will properly split them apart and match correctly.

The 2007 version was made with chinese cast and crew, and was apparently a 20-episode show. The new 2023 show has english-looking cast, and only 6 episodes.

The Marriage of Inconvenience on Plex’s metadata site looks like a combination of both shows, listing 20 episodes despite it only having 6. You also notice there are screenshots for the first 6 episodes of the 20, indicating a metadata mix problem. Additionally, the cast and poster are chinese, which I’d bet came from the 2007 version.

One metadata site has the 2023 version, and another has the 2007 version. Plex mistakenly combined the two into one, which means it’s all just wrong info.

That is exactly correct. But are Plex admins able to separate the two? They may not both be in IMDB, but both are listed separately in TMDB, which is where Plex pulls a lot of it’s metadata.

They should be able to fix it.

For TV shows, TMDB and TVDB are the only sources they consider

Don’t look at IMDB, it’s only used for movies and often has a lot of conflicting info for TV shows

Thanks for report.

When I was looking at it on TMDB i noticed the 2023 show did not have a link to the proper show on TVDB which i believe we try to sync to make sure we have the right show. I think maybe it that comparison is what is tripped it up. But I could be completely wrong and I am leaving a note for our metadata team to look into it.

Mine matched up perfectly with the 2023 series in Plex TV.

All 6 episodes, titles and thumbnails match the English version - all 6 episodes.

  • The wallpaper is however wrong.
** yes, the cast is pulling from the 2007 series with the same title.

If you manually or already had episode order for that show set to TVDB (aired) then may be fine

Linking it up to TTVDB works for most of the metadata, but the cast listed is still from the 2007 series. This is why the series need to be separated.

gotcha thanks for info

I noticed this series now has the correct artwork and cast.
Thank you!!
