2 Servers, Seperate Machines, indirect.

Hi
I have PMS installed on my pc in my room as my main media server, we have a garden cottage that we have connected to the network now (directly into a gigabit switch - no router on that side)and we installed PMS on the tenants laptop that has his drives connected to it. we logged in under my account on his laptop as well as on my pc. We then set up his libraries for his content. I Claimed the new server under my account and what i now get is the ability to see his laptop as a server with his content under one server name and my pc with my content on under another server name.

When i select his server however indirect underneath it unlike my server name which says direct.
When I look at the servers from his laptop both say nearby, However when I look at them from my pc - his says indirect.
Neither of us will be accessing the servers outside of the home network.
What have i done wrong - what do i need to change? also - please dumb it down as much as possible LOL, im not the most tech savvy person around.

This is the setup
My PMS pc into Netgear DGND3700v2 router
ethernet cable into a tenda accesspoint
cable from access point into gigabit switch
cable into laptop running PMS in the outside cottage.

Outside cottage sees his server and mine as nearby
My PMS sees mine ass nearby and his as Indirect.

His laptop PMS and my PMS both logged in under my account.
both netgear and access point set to google DNS 8.8.8.8 AND 8.8.4.4

Either your access point is doing something more than a regular ethernet switch (does it have differently labeled ethernewt ports or are all the same?)

or your main router is doing something called ‘DNS rebinding protection’
Search for a similarly named preference in its settings.
see https://support.plex.tv/articles/206225077-how-to-use-secure-server-connections#dnsrebinding

As a test, switch Secure Connections in the cottage server to ‘Disabled’
then restart it.
After a few minutes, reload your web app and try to reach the cottage server.

Thanks, will give it a try and let you know.

Is there a contiguous ethernet wire between your house and the cottage
or is there something inbetween, like a PowerLan?

Nope, it literally runs like this…
My pms into netgear router, router to access point, access point to gigabit switch in cottage and switch to 2nd pms.
I’m tempted to bypass the access point tomorrow and simply use another switch so that it would be direct.

I tried the " disable secure connections" but sadly then I could not access the server at all. I am going to try another switch tomorrow and se if that works. Have been hammering away at this problem all day now and am a little over it already. Lol

At least this indicates that it is not an issue with DNS rebinding
but rather that you cannot contact a machine in the cottage directly.
Try a ping
If that fails too, you’ll know there is something in your network preventing direct contact between main house and cottage.

The ping failed, I can successfully ping every device except the laptop on that side. I’m wondering if it is set to disallow incoming connections or a firewall setting/defender setting causing the issue. Will play around a bit more tomorrow. Once again, thank you so much for helping me out here.

Which gives me an idea:
Verify that the user has classified his network connection as a ‘private’ network and not as ‘public’.
If he’s using Windows, that is.

Hi Otto

Once again - many thanks for your help, I have managed to solve the problem now and as it turns out the access point was configured stupidly, everything now shows up perfectly as it should.Cheers.
