2 windows 10 installs on same computer - 2 Plex servers - 1 info/data source?

Server Version#: 1.20.1.3252
Player Version#: 4.34.4

For reasons I had to install a second windows 10 system on my computer. Thus, I have 2 on here. I currently use the new one most of the time so I put my Plex server on it. All the data files and media stayed on the drives they are on. On the new system Plex is like a clean slate. In other words all my Collection are gone (@50 of them), all the separations of movies are gone (Same movie but 4K, 3D, HD versions as SEPARATE movies…not 1 movie with 3 versions.) Same with TV series. And worst of all, all VIEWED data is gone. So where we were in a TV series is NOT carried over to the new server. Again…same data files so not sure why.

I don’t understand why as PLEX is pointing to the same data files on both windows version servers.

What may I be doing wrong? This has created a HUGE headache for myself but also my friends that use my server. IS there anything I can do to make the new server KNOW all the same data as the old server. I just want both servers to utilize the same information because I do go back and forth between windows installs. Or am I just SOL???

Thanks!

Greg

The difference is the Plex data folder and the registry branch, which both are stored inside the old windows installation.

That is where Plex stores its information about the media files, which library is monitoring which drive and folder etc.pp.

Your best bet would be to

  1. move the Plex data folder to a place which can be seen and written to from both Windows installations. You better make sure that all drive letters are identical! [HowTo] An extended guide on how to move the Plex data folder on Windows
  2. make sure that the Windows user account under which you will be running Plex Server has both “read” and “write” privileges to all files, folders, and subfolders of the shared Plex data location. This will be separate in each Windows installation, so you will have to check and grant privileges twice.
  3. export the “Plex Media Server” branch of the registry from the old Windows installation HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server and import it into the new Windows installation

If you do this in the above order, your Plex Server under the new Windows will have the exact same data and libraries as the old Windows.

I know you would answer that one for me Otto. Thank you so much. About to go get the registry info from the original windows install. As for the data folders etc…they are all on a central location and when I did the new windows install I made sure ALL drive letters are identical. The ONLY difference is that C: and E: interchange based on what system is loaded. Everything else stays the same between the 2. Thanks again!!!

Hey Otto, maybe this is a stupid question… I would swear that at some time in the distant past I set the location of my Plex Data folder. Yet, I can’t find that information anywhere in the server settings. Am I imagining that?? Or am I just blind. LOL

Asking because I only have ONE Plex Data folder (on my D drive) that I know of. However, at one time I DID have 2 (long long time ago) as I was testing something and then I thought I deleted one. Can’t find it now anyway. So if both installations are using only ONE Plex Data folder, then why would there be 2 totally different layouts, etc… I don’t see that much data in the registry to account for all the missing information and layouts… Hmmmm So I guess my question would be…how does plex know where to find the Plex Data folder? As you can put it anywhere, I have…

Greg

You’re not blind. It was discovered to be a security risk if I recall. So now the location has to be modified in the registry.

I think the info on how to is in the support articles.
(Sorry on mobile at moment so difficult to link.)

EDIT. Think this is it At least the regkey part.

That is in the registry. It has been set in your old Windows to drive D:
but apparently not in the new Windows. So copy the registry data from the old to the new Windows.
