How can I re-sync my Plex server after Windows 10 forced me to re-install?

Hi,

I had an issue with a usb device this evening and ended up having to reinstall/update a fresh version of windows 10 on my system. Now it can no longer find my Plex server even though all data is in the same drives and the PC name is the same.

Is there an easy way to re-sync it without having to go through my entire library/folder setup again? I used to really like win 10, but now I wouldn’t recommend it if you paid me! (not relevant but I need to get it off my chest!)

Many thanks,
Billybobble

So let me get this straight…

You reinstalled Windows 10… Was this on your client PC, or the PC that was running the Plex Media Server?

If it was the PC with the Server, check to make sure when Windows reinstalled, that it didn’t move all your old programs to a another folder for the reinstall, sometimes it will create a Windows.old folder.

If it was the PC with the Client, check your firewall/antivirus on the client as well as the media server.

Yeah it did the old windows.old folder but I purposefully have all Plex info & data on other drives, though I’m sure there is some info kept in C: drive I’m not too sure where it would all be, assuming there are folders in documents and the appdata folders.

I only have the one PC with Plex on but I have something like 8 drives on it. Trust me I didn’t want to have windows do it’s business again, I’ve lost a lot of apps and settings to set up again. Plex being one of the bigger headaches unless there is a way I can ‘trick’ it into thinking nothing has changed. I hope that makes sense.

Thank you very much for your response, apologies if I don’t reply immediately, British Telecom seem beset on not allowing me internet access, currently tethering from a phone with limited data, fml as they say!

Look in the help material under backup and their restoration if you have backups.

The bulk of the data is in the Plex data folder.

If you preserved it somewhere, all you need to do is to tell the newly installed PMS where the data folder is.

If you can manage, that each media drive gets the same drive letter on the new Windows installation as it had on the old one, then you’ve got no reason for a headache.

Some settings are stored in the Windows registry. Most important for shared users. If you can export these from the old registry, you won’t need to re-create all your shares.

Thanks for all the input guys, OttoKerner’s post guided me to the solution from the first link in his post. Saved me a LOT of time! I love Plex!
