I tried playing a file exceeding this bandwidth and got buffering problems. I realize files this large aren't supported (I read the faq) although Im still puzzled.
You'd think the PS4 is more than capable of playing bluray sized files, but I guess this is another case of 3rd party devs being stuck with a less capable player. If Thats the case, why not reduce the max level to something that works flawlessly?
It seems Plex has done some media analysis on the files prior to playback. This is good because when I play this file with its bitrate peaking @ 37 mbps, Plex understands it needs to transcode rather than direct stream even if the videofile is otherwise supported. Its just a little strange that the settings opt for a quality thats not really working great.
Here's the deal. If we didn't offer the option to max it out we receive inverse questions and/or complaints. The setting is there but you'll notice we recommend a much lower value (8Mbps).
Setting quality to 20Mbps allows videos between 10Mbps and 20Mbps to be considered for remuxing. I don't suggest transcoding to a 20Mbps stream.
We're discussing how to improve our quality settings. They're not intuitive enough as is.
Well is the player capable of playing back files with even higher bitrate? If so, why not increase the number so that big files that are now being transcoded due to high bitrate are being direct played instead. It would certainly be nice to be able to play larger files, although 20 mbps does cover most cases.
Anyhow. Great work on the client. After seeing how poorly the 360 version performed (sync issues and low quality video), I love how polished this is in comparison. If it ever gets DTS and MKV support, id say its pretty much perfect.
Yep I feel your pain. Seeking is tough for these TV clients. PHT has the benefit of a faster processor/ram/network, better decoding, generous buffering and years of tuning.
I filed an issue to track investigation into a couple ways we may be able to improve seek performance for PS3/4.
The one recurring issue I have with seeking on the Samsung client is that the sound will often get muted after a seek, and I'll have to hit seek in either direction again to get it to come back. Gets real clunky, but I understand the inherent challenges of it.
