2nd generation drobo. Want to use for Plex w/o a computer

I have an old Drobo 4 bay 2nd generation backup that I’ve moved all my media to. I would like to see if anyone in the past was able to connect the old drobo to their router and be able to get the Plex Media server to connect to it that way. I don’t have a desktop computer and don’t want to have to connect it to my laptop and have that running all day. Is this possible?

Thanks.

As I recall, Drobo devices are simply backup storage units, with no CPU, correct? If so, then something has to be running the Plex server app. Unless you have that router (Nighthawk?) that has a built-in Plex server, you’ll have to have a running computer attached and running the Plex server.

I do have a Nighthawk R7500 v2 router. I did notice some media functions. Don’t recall Plex being one of them.

nighthawk x10 is the only router I have seen with plex built in.

all that said, I wouldn’t trust a router or drobo for a plex server.

an nvidia shield might be a solution, it can run as both client and server with local and/or remote storage (ie using the drobo for media storage). this is probably the simplest and best option for a small plex library. not necessarily the cheapest, nor the best for larger libraries.

another option might be an older model NUC you can pick up on amazon for cheap. you would still need an OS and be able to manage that along with plex and any other apps/services on it.
