Beginning Plex Media Server version 1.41.7 (expected to be released Q2 of 2025), we will no longer offer new Plex Media Server packages for Drobo NAS devices. Drobo also ended support for their NAS devices in January 2023.
While older versions of Plex Media Server may continue to run on these unsupported Drobo devices, new releases will not be available. That means that newer features, fixes, and improvements will not be available. It’s possible that future Plex system changes could affect access to such older Plex Media Server releases.
We encourage you to migrate your Plex Media Server installation to an actively supported platform to ensure that you continue to receive critical security and feature improvements moving forward. That could be moving to a new, different NAS device or to running Plex Media Server on a computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux) and pointing to content stored on a NAS device.
Common Questions
Can I still run Plex Media Server on my Drobo?
Technically, you can continue running the last compatible version of Plex Media Server on the device. However, you will not receive any security or bug fixes, improvements, new features, or the like. It’s also possible that future system changes could affect access to old, outdated server releases. We strongly encourage you to migrate your setup to an actively supported platform.
Can I run Plex Media Server elsewhere and host my content on the Drobo?
Yes, that’s possible. You’re welcome to run a current version of Plex Media Server on a Windows/Mac/Linux computer and point to content stored on a NAS device, for instance. However, keep in mind that Drobo itself is also no longer providing system updates, so that means that the device itself is not receiving security updates, for instance. So, it’s worth considering whether or not you actually want to use a device that is not receiving any system updates.
What if I want to move my server installation elsewhere?
We can’t directly assist with moving an installation ourselves and cannot provide specific instructions or troubleshooting. However, you may find these support articles relevant, depending on exactly what you want to do:
- Move an Install to Another System
- Move Media Content to a New Location
- Move Viewstate/Ratings from One Install to Another
