I’ve recently switched from a Mac to a PC. I have my Plex library on a Drobo 5N2. When I access Plex on an iPad from remote, I get a message about bandwidth not being enough. When I had the Mac, I created a library access on that, connected to the Drobo, and it worked fine. Now that I’m on Windows, I don’t know how to do what I did with the Mac. I guess I would like a Media server on the Windows PC connected to the Drobo library of movies/tv. Is that possible?
Thanks,
Rick Greenspan
You can map the Drobo drives to the Windows PC, then run Plex Media Server on the PC and connect it to your network drives for the libraries. I ran that precise setup with a Drobo 5n2 for years. Ideally, you’d want all of this hard wired ethernet.
Not sure I’d want to run PMS on the Drobo itself, as I don’t think it’s got enough processing power for heavy transcoding. Don’t know, though… I never tried it.
I use a program called LAN_Speedtest that I found online to test the speed connection between the NAS, and the PC. It creates a virtual file and tests the communication speed between the PC and NAS. If that’s kicking back lower than expected results, then there’s something in your chain holding things up. Ideally you should hit somewhere between 100 and 1000 mbps if you’ve got your stuff set up right.
Thanks for getting back to me. I’ve tried installing the Plex Media Server on the PC. When I click the icon, nothing happens. I thought there might be a conflict, so I went into the Drobo Dashboard and stopped the Plex on there. When I tried again from the PC, after a bit I got a message about something being unclaimed, but then I tried again and it doesn’t start. I’m totally lost.
In Windows, Plex runs silently in the background. Nothing “pops up” when you start it. It should appear somewhere in your task tray as an icon. If you find it there and right click, you should get some options about launching it.
