Server Version#: 1.25.3.5385
Just moving movie files around so the scanner had to readd movies to the library and for some reason the scanner will not auto match 3 letter movie titles (Spy, Ted, RED). When I custom search to match the title it lists no matches until I remove the year and search again. It is usually the first match listed after that. Please help!
I have no such problems. The movies “+1”, “M”, “Spy”, and several other three, or fewer, letter names match perfectly.
I would be curious as to exactly how the files are named. Naming is the only thing that I can think of that causes lack of matching.
My “Spy” movie is named “Spy (2015).mkv” and “+1” is named:
“+1 (2013) .mp4”
I do, sometimes, get a mismatch or no match but, except for about 7 or 8 movies out of the 4000+ I have, always found a misspelling or typo that caused the matching problem. One was really hard to see when I looked at it. It was a typo but I almost did not see it. I plead “old eyes” as an excuse. The file was named, incorrectly,
“Safety Last! {1923).mkv”
That movie I had renamed manually and did not see, in several edits, that the date was not correctly enclosed in parenthesis ( ) but I used a “{” instead.of “(”.
Obviously for a scanner that used to be smart enough to use my naming convention it has gone downhill and can no longer be smart enough to match them. My files have always been named “Spy_[2015].mkv” and it use to never have a problem matching these movies. I have also noticed that tv miniseries that used to have no problem coming up as full movies can no longer be added that way (as in every Stephen King movie put on television). Obviously keeping things smart is hard to do.
Just because Plex matched bad file names in the past does not mean they will in the future. There have been cases reported on this board where bad file names worked for a while and then suddenly stopped working. It is not unusual or unreasonable. If you follow Plex’s naming exactly and you disable use of “Local media assets” completely. then you will find that matching works well.
One thing about your file name of:
“Spy_[2015].mkv”
It is wrong for a couple of reasons.
- The dash “_” character is not generally allowed.
- everything in square brackets is ignored so the date in your file name is not considered by Plex for anything.
The proper name for your file is “Spy (2015).mkv”
Clearly you can use any naming convention you like but Plex is only guaranteed to match perfect naming.
Again, just because Plex used to match bad file names in no way assures that it will in the future.
It is best not to fight “The great and powerful PlexoSaurus” and under no circumstances should you feed it after midnight. The impacts of feeding Plex after midnight can be catastrophic. The damage done to your data would be greater than that the town of “Kingston Falls” endured. Particularly if you get your server wet then you would be totally doomed.
To me matching “bad file names” correctly is a good thing. So in the future if it is that smart again then I will be happy. Retardation is never an answer and that is what I have been dealing with since I paid for my plex pass. It used to be good so that must be bad.
You are perfectly free to name your files any way you want.
Plex is perfectly free to require correct naming, for their software to work correctly.
Your PlexPass means nothing as far as matching or any other functionality. is concerned It only opens up additional features and supports Plex.
However if you want Plex to work correctly for you then you must follow Plex’s naming conventions.
It is your choice. Not Plex’s. Not mine, And not anyone or anything other than you.
It is now up to you. You can fix your naming or you can just let it go. If you choose the first then I believe that Plex will work correctly but, if you choose the second, then Plex may work most of the time but there will be a lot of exceptions.
I just find it easier and quicker and generally better to match what Plex wants for File Names.
BTW: Plex’s naming is quite standard and works for other programs. In particular any library of movies that match by Plex’s standards will also work with Emby, Kodi and every other media management program I have seen.
Once more you can do as you please with your filenames but for Plex to work correctly over time you must name your files by their standard, not yours or any other scheme. But I do not really care. My advice on this is at an end so I will just unwatch this thread and let it go where it will.
