3D movies

Hi,

For the first time I have a 3D movie in my PLEX library.

I have a Sony XBR-75X850C and I use the Plex Player for Android which is the OS of the TV.

When I play the 3D movie, it is “split screen”

I’ve been trying to play around with the options (using the Action menu of the TV) but nothing works.
And the PLEX app is surprisingly simple, I haven’t found any option.

So, how can I make my TV “understand” that this is a 3D movie?

Thanks!

By “split screen” I’m guessing you mean that it’s showing two images split left and right? On your TV’s 3D menu (may be under “Options”) switch the 3D mode to Side-by-side.

Only the Samsung Smart TV app does support 3D.
If your TV doesn’t support switching to 3D during a running app it won’t work.

Maybe you can use DLNA Plex Server with a built in player of your TV (if it has one).

That is not quite true. The Samsung App is the only one that will turn on the 3D feature of your TV. Any other Plex client will just send the video file as-is and you need to manually enable the 3D mode for your TV. Please make sure your TV supports the type of 3D video you are sending it.

Thats what I said

God damn I wanted to click QUOTE and I clicked ANSWERED…

But I still have questions :’(

Well I’ve been reading the comments and I’m not sure I understand…

I’m sure my TV supports 3D.
As for the client, I’m using the PLEX app, running on Android (my Sony XBR-75X850C is Android based)

So you’re saying that only the Samsung TV supports “telling” the TV to switch to 3D mode.

And so in the end I need to manually switch my TV to 3D.

But that’s what I’m saying, I don’t see where or how I can do that, I’ve tried everything.

This is your TV setting, so look at your TV remote.

Since you’re using the built in Android based smart tv feature, it really depends if Sony’s firmware allows the user to manually switch to 3D mode while using the smart TV input. The way to find out is to learn how to use the 3D switching feature on another input then try doing the same thing in the smart TV feature.

I have the 55 inch version of that telly. I use the Sony remote app on my phone to switch the 3D on or off.

But where is the setting in the Sony remote app ??

I downloaded it and I just can’t find it :frowning:

That is not quite true, OpenPHT/Rasplex automatically switches mode for common 3D formats.

I did not know you guys added that feature. May I ask how you are doing this, since the apps just send an HDMI signal out. AFAIK, there isn’t a way to trigger 3d mode through hdmi.

improved support for auto switching in next release 1.6.3 in Preferences.

Ok. Thanks for these info. You are basically using the filename to try to trigger 3d mode. I thought it was something different.

More than just the file name, load it up and have a look.

Hah. I don’t have a 3D TV. Just curious how you were getting the TV to switch.

I have a 2011 Samsung SMART TV and 3D films streamed through Plex refuse to be recognised by the TV as a 3D movie however when I play the very same file through DNLA it works perfectly.

Any ideas?

My Samsung TV only seams to support 3D if played back via the Videos TV app (DNLA). The same movie played back via Plex is not recognised by the TV as being 3D and you cannot force it.

You have to name your files correctly and add HSBS or similar to your file name.

Well long researches have led me to a solution.

In this thread someone said they were using the Sony remote app to switch 3D… I downloaded it, and there is no such option.

Basically, on any input, you can call up an “action” menu and you have a 3D sub-menu to toggle 3D on and off.

Ridiculously enough, when you’re listening to content from an app, the action menu does not contain a 3D sub-menu.

So googled around with different keywords I kept ending up on threads that said to press the 3D button on the remote.

But I don’t have a 3D button on my remote… I looked 1 million times just to make sure i didn’t miss it.

Then some threads recommended the use of a harmony remote, to program a 3D button.

I tried that too, but there were no 3D button available to be assigned.

AND FINALLY, I ended up on this post:
http://community.sony.com/t5/facebookforums/facebooksingletopicpage/facebook-app/464566106927205/message-uid/566745/tab/board

Well, basically, you add a second Sony TV to your Harmony device list, just so you have a 3D button.
The Sony TV is actually an older model… because back then their TV remote DID have a mother flicking 3D button.

I was like WTF, whatev’ u know… but GOD DAMN IT, it works.

Now magically, I press 3D and it opens up a small menu to ask what type of 3D (in my case: SBS) and it WORKS.

I really can’t understand why it would be so complicated that you have to find a work around involving the mandatory use of an external device (Logitech Harmony remote) and the use of a previous model remote control button, instead of just allowing the 3D sub-menu in the god forsaken “action” menu.

Anyway, I just thought I’d share my solution so if any n00b like me can’t figure it out, then this is my testimony.

Also I wrote an insult letter to Sony, they have not responded at this time.
