I'm also having stuttering issues when it comes to streaming 3D movies. They are sized 4-12GB. All other files, including ordinary 12GB 1080p MKV files stream just fine though.
My setup is the following (full info attached):
- Macbook (white) running PMS and PlexConnect. Connected via Ethernet to my Airport Extreme (upstairs).
- ATV3 connected via wifi (downstairs).
I can stream the 3D movies with Plex Home Theater on my Macbook Pro downstairs via wifi without any problems.
I've tried to convert the files to an iTunes compatible container optimized for streaming using the iFlicks app, and it got a little better, but there is still stuttering.
After some testing last night I realized the stuttering is due to the subs. If no subs are activated there is no stuttering. But since I use .ass subs, generated by sub3dtool (https://code.google.com/p/sub3dtool/) to get subs on both frames of a 3D movie, and since Apple TV cannot display .ass subs, probably what is happening is that PMS is transcoding the movie, "burning in" the sub on both frames while wifi streaming it to the ATV. Thus the lag. That would also explain why there is no lag when watching the same movie with subs on PHT on the Macbook, since PHT can display the subs.
Dragging an Ethernet cable isn't an option, so any suggestions what could improve the stream speed to stop the lag? After converting to to an iTunes .m4v container, the lag is 2-3 sec every 2-3 min, so its not much. Would it help to purchase the current generation of AirPort Extreme (I have the 2011 version), which would boost up the wifi a bit I suppose, even though ATV doesn't have ac-wifi?
The options otherwise I'm looking at is either to connect my other Macbook directly with HDMI to the TV, when I want to watch a 3D movie (not so often, so its ok, and I'll have to put up with the fan sound), or better yet to re-enconde the movie and "burn in" the sub on both frames, before adding it to Plex. I haven't found any good OS X app yet that does that though.
