Ok…I’ve been tremendously happy with Plex over the years. I’ve settled on Roku in the house, iOS devices while traveling and PMS on a windows system with the storage on QNAP. Rock solid and has been for a few years now. The last bit I’d love to solve the 3D problem.
It seems everything I have is MVC based 3D. Works fine on disc to TV, works find ripping via Makemkv and played on PC via 3D player. However the introduction of plex and/or Roku seems to break things.
Any options for MVC with Plex on Roku ? I see reports of it maybe working but suspect that it’s the app on the TV directly and not through a player.
I should say I can make the encoded m2ts of mp4 files play on plex (and they work 3d on a PC with a 3d viewer) but on Plex they just look like regular videos.
Thoughts ?
I’m beginning to suspect transcoding vs. direct play.
If the file will direct play, it should show up as 3D. If it has to transcode, it will be 2D.
I haven’t found a way to actually test this yet, so I may be way off.
At the moment, Plex has no support for (or even awareness of) 3D. That means it processes SBS or TopBottom 3D as if it were 2D. Which most of the time works - if the actual playing device can make something of it.
With MVC files, I think either Plex doesn’t play these at all
or
if it plays them, you see only a 2D version of the picture.
I think there is nothing you can do until Plex has been properly made aware of 3D.
This is old, but for my setup the answer was to encode video as SBS and then have the TV turn it into 3D. Which worked but was far more painful than I wanted.
