As a long time Plex Pass member (5+ years) I want to say THANK YOU!
Thank you for creating such as wonderful software platform solution that has enabled myself and my family and friends to enjoy our many multimedia content items. You have allowed us to easily consume our massive libraries of music and video content across our vast and diverse range of technology hardware devices.
In a world of Apple IOS vs. Android, Linux vs. Windows, there is one argument that never requires any person to choose sides….Plex is amazing and everyone can agree on that.
I have not and do not post many things on the forums, nor have I made many (if any) requests over the years. I usually wait patiently for Plex to do their MAGIC and give me something wonderful to play with. But today will be my first forum request.
I am now a proud owner of a Sony Bravia X930D (Yes, the new 2016 Model). It is an Android TV.
**3D Content? I know some feel 3D is disappearing, but I still love watching 3D movies. I know this question has been brought before, but I am hoping that times have changed or evolved to allow 3D MVC ability. Simply put, I would like to take a 3D Bluray file (such as ISO) and have Plex Player execute the same way and Bluray players can execute it. I have read on the internet that another program called Vidon has the ability to do this. So I am hoping Plex can somehow put that ability into the Plex player or possibly transcode that ability on the server side. **
Passive 3D 4k is FANTASTIC and using programs like MakeMKV, you can rip a 3D file in framepacked MVC format and have a beautifully lossless 1080p 3D full resolution experience.
Currently, I have to convert to full SBS or TaB, but would love the ability to play the files natively.

Any chance of this?
From my research and testing the only option is Kodi. But the Kodi app for Android TV is not ready for primetime, so I have been using my Mac Mini with Kodi…Really Kodi is the boss. Plex has some major catching up to do.
Simply rip your 3D HD or UHD content to MKV with MVC enabled. Execute via Kodi and it will see the 3D portion of the MKV, play it and you can manually kick your TV to 3D mode if it doesn’t automatically switch to 3D. And Kodi has their GUI setup to convert and properly overlay during 3D playback…It looks nice.
Kodi has a massive thread talking about this with detailed help topics and some recommended hardware you can use to make 3D viewing easier and better quality.
I am a long time Plex Pass user and fan. But since my 4k TV arrived a few weeks ago. Kodi and I are becoming friends. I will give Plex some time to catch up, but when its time to renew my PlexPass…Well, I may think twice. My money will go to the team that seems more passionate about their code. I didn’t ask for a Plex Player with a modified GUI…I was happy with the Home Theatre GUI. What I want is more “under the hood” ability. See my other posts…
Hey Plex…Something I learned using Kodi…they support all file transfer protocols…Now I can use SMB or NFS…which translates to better streaming quality. My Sony 4K TV doesn’t complain about network buffering problems when using Kodi. The same 4k 50GByte Martian movie I “tried” to watch with Plex and it stopped every 2-5 minutes…with alerts popping up complaining about network speed and “my server wasn’t powerful enough”…The Kodi Android TV app played it like a champ…
Here here. If Plex added this i’d consider moving back.
I too splurged on a LG 4K 3D set and have also migrated to kodi. The latest test builds of kodi 17 for windows offer full EVERYTHING support provided you have the hardware to push it. LibreELEC test builds for kodi 17 support 3D MVC/ISO on the Raspberry Pi.

Why does it have to be open source? Didn’t we pay enough money to have a full featured media player?
It doesn’t but Plex clearly isn’t interested in anything that will cost them a lot of money to license. Heck, even kodi doesn’t have it in their mainline branches on Windows. You have to use a fork.
I would love full resolution 3D MVC in Plex but they don’t care about the feature. They can’t even stick an identifying factor in the data PMS picks up by scanning the files.
The best hope is that the Plex for Kodi devs resolved the issue where you can’t pick the 3D mode, then we can use a Pi3 with LibreELEC and get full resolution MVC 3D with a Plex UI.
Isn’t there a distinction between software processing of MVC and hardware processing? I think that mainline Kodi supports GPUs processing of MVC. I may be wrong about that, but if I’m not, why not at least implement that?
Early 2021 clean-up: duplicate – while this thread was specifically about MVC 3D, there’s already an older, more generic suggestion (even though this suggestion already accumulated 3 votes, while nobody had voted on the original thread since the forum migration – apologies for the inconvenience!)
