4K buffering but only through Plex

Server Version#:1.18.2.2058

Hi All,

Having an issue when playing almost all 4K movies through either plex player or plex app on Samsung 4k TV. The sometimes play for a few seconds before buffering other times they just lock up the player. If I watch the same movies using VLC they work fine. These are playing over the LAN and not remotely.
Spec is
Intel i7 4770 @3.4ghz
32Gb RAM
Raid SSD
GTX 1070Ti 8gb
Gigabit lan connected to Buffalo 16Tb NAS

No one has any ideas?

EDIT: Removed my totally unnecessary commentary.

4K using HEVC(H.265) codec takes 8 times the computational power of H.264, without a Plex Pass and the use of the GTX 1070 Ti 8gb you get buffering.

No need to be a smart ass bell end about it, I did look for an answer but maybe as I’m quite new to plex I wasn’t asking the right question. So basically the plex player is a bit ■■■■ as it plays fine with vlc. It’s not transcoding either and like I say some 4k work fine.

Just to clarify, the issue is only when playing remotely?

If so, what are the settings on the Samsung Plex app?

You also mention, “Plex Player” — which one and what is the version?

Not remotely no, it’s over a gigabit lan it’s struggling. I knew it wouldn’t play 4k over the wan as my internet upload isn’t fast enough.

I’ve tried it on the built in plex player on the Samsung tv and also on a firestick.

It just seemed odd to buffer on a lan connection when it plays fine on vlc over the same lan. Even if I play it directly on the plex server through plex it buffers.

  1. change the audio stream to dolby digital/dts 5.1 or stereo
  2. make sure subtitles are off
  3. if you have tautulli, see if it the server is trying to transcode, if so see #1 and #2 again.
  4. go read, or re-read the link posted above, it has all the answers and solutions you need.
