4K HDR movies buffering on the Apple TV 4K ? Remux your files!

I’m kinda new to the 4K party and already off to a rough start.

I don’t know what the latest Plex client on the latest Apple TV 4K has a problem with in the files which gave me some troubles (constant buffering with direct play on a gigabit local network while playing MakeMKV dumps of 4K HDR Blurays, with mpv as player backend, no load on the server, no transcoding at all), but I’ve found a solution : Remux them with MKVToolnix, no re-encoding, just plain remux. It solved the issues instantly.

It’s a bad idea to change your media to meet the (temporary?) limitations of a particular player. This is not the way. This is a real problem and this needs to be fixed on the player or the platform itself.

Remuxing does not change a thing in the video/audio data, it rebuilds the container and may fix sync issues in the various streams, meaning something was probably F-ed up to begin with with how MakeMKV and other apps did it.
I have properly muxed 4K files which didn’t need to be touched at all
