4K HDR optimized version

Server Version#: 1.15.4.994
Player Version#: Western Digital WD-PR4100

Hi! I assume that the WD-PR4100 is not capable of transcoding new 4K HDR formats on the aire, I have read that is not compatible with H265 codecs, only with H264 codec but I don’t understand why it’s not able to transcode an optimized version of a 4K HDR MKV. It takes 4/6 hours to transcode it and once It finishes, only I see a green image. I trancode to 20 MBPs but the optimized version says to me 0,5 MBPs.

Any idea to have 4K versions with optimized versions (not green).

Thanks!!

When Plex, on any platform, transcodes video, of any format, it is to H.264.

Plex Media Server transcoder does not support HDR -> SDR tonemapping, so transcoded HDR video will almost always look rather poor, with washed out colors.

The above applies to transcoding in real time and optimized videos.

WRT the WD-PR4100, according to the Plex NAS Compatibility Guide, the PR4100 has a Pentium N3710 CPU. With hardware accelerated transcoding enabled, it can transcode 4K SDR media, but not 4K HDR media.

I’m not sure why you’re getting a green image instead of a poor quality, but viewable, video. Either way, the general rule of thumb with Plex is to not transcode 4K HDR material. If attempted, a good outcome is not expected.

Hi! I have checked that if I uncheck “use hardware transcoding if it’s possible” the PR4100 at least transcodes the video (not to a green image) and I can play remotely an optimised version of a 4K HDR film at 1080p 20 MBPs, now I’m trying again to convert Interstellar to 1080p with the “use hardware transcoding if it’s possible” activated but I thing I will get a green image.

Thanks!
