4K HDR10 (HEVC Main 10) video Stuttering on direct play

Server Version#: 1.32.8.7639
Player Version#: 8.30 (7668)

When trying to stream a film in 4k hdr10 to Apple TV devices the video takes ages to start and immediately buffers. The video to the device is trying to direct play and if I turn direct play off the video still takes ages to load and then stutters. If however I leave direct play on and select ‘use old video player’ to on the video plays immediately without any stuttering.

This happens on all 4 of my Apple TVs.

Same, and I just started searching into it and it looks like it’s a known issue with a lot of locked threads about it. It only effects 4k content and I guess I’ll try infuse to see if it’s the video files or Plex.

This problem is pretty common. In the Plex app on Apple systems (iOS, iPadOS, tvOS), there are two players – mpv and avplayer. These two players handle video compatibility differently. Some videos work better with mpv, while others are better with avplayer. If you choose the wrong player, you might face issues like videos not playing or experiencing frame drops and stuttering.

The problem is, when something goes wrong, users have to manually switch between these players. Many users might not know what the issue is, and some might not even be aware that there are two players. Plex could do better by developing a feature that automatically picks the player that works best for the video, instead of making users specify it themselves.

Add to that the two audio engines (which are still available on tvOS).
I can pretty much get anything to play on my Apple TV depending on if I’m using my HomePods or AirPods for audio.
But yeah the constant switching of both audio and video engines is insane just to make media playback successfully.

Infuse may have a less than stellar UI/UX but it’s still far less effort than constantly delving into Plex hidden settings.
I would actually be relatively happy if we could simply change the video/audio engines on the fly in the way we can change audio/subs.
