AppleTV 4K Stutter when playing UHD HDR content (Enhanced Player)

Server Version#: 1.32.3.7089
Player Version#: 8.20 (6066)

I’ve started getting a noticeable video stutter (almost like a pulldown correction) recently on the appleTV client when Direct Playing UHD HDR media using the Enhanced Player. Media is multiple movies with 10-bit HEVC HDR10 video and DTS-MA 5.1 or 7.1 Audio.

Searching the forum and reddit it looks like Disabling “Direct Play” should correct this, however, I’m not able to direct stream the media either (I just get a forever pinwheel on video, though audio will eventually play).

Playing the files in Infuse on the same devices works normally, and playing the files on a computer or iPhone also play normally in the plex clients.

EDIT: I have gotten Direct Stream to work, however the stutter is still visible when using Direct Stream and the Enhanced Player.

EDIT 2: Just to add some background, the network is a 10Gbps network running on Cat6 (AppleTV is hardlined at 1Gbps). Server is a Mac Mini with 10Gbps hardline and the switch is also 10Gbps.

This is still an issue in 8.21 (6217)

I’ve been using Plex for many years. And stutter have been an ongoing problem for a long time.

With some updates it works, with some it don’t. It’s actually one of the reasons I don’t get the plex pass. I want to spend my money on stuff that actually works.

My only recommendation is to go into plex settings and change “play with the old player” to ON.

That might solve it. Until the next update…

Still an issue in 8.22

Anyone from the plex team able to reproduce this and offer comment?

Having the same problem on 8.23.1. Visibly dropping frames.

Forgot to mention, web player on my Mac Mini to a 4k monitor with Direct Stream works fine. No dropped frames.

And, the AppleTV is wired, not wireless. It is a v1 4k aTV, I believe.

I’ve had this happen too on a file with DV. Oddly, the workaround was to select the old audio player vs the video one. Stutter stopped right away with AC3 5.1 audio.

That helped, but it didn’t completely fix it. Still not performing adequately.
