4K Local streaming does NOT work

Here’s the Android TV Network Logs as requested.

Can you play the same video from your friend and get me the Android log again for comparison. Something is causing the playback to get restricted to 1080p. What I think is causing this should also affect playback from your friend’s server but you say it plays fine, so I’m at a bit of a loss for now.

Logs from My TV while playing from friends Plex attached.
Avatar.2.TV.Network.Logging.Remote.txt (101.2 KB)

I only grabbed the logs that were within 20 minutes or so of me playing the movie from his Plex server.

I replaced his actual external IP address with “friends.external.ip.here” in the logs : )

Edit, I say it plays fine because the Plex app is telling me that in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. (as seen is the screenshots above). And his PMS is also telling us that I’m playing it directly and not Transcoded.

Any other recommendations?

Your logs are indicating that something is applying a limit only allowing 1080p content to direct play. I can’t see why though. I’m pushing this up the chain to have a dev take a look to see if they can figure it out.

Plex App on my TV is now 9.25.0.2374 (a382b5b)
Plex Server Version is now 1.32.4.7195

Still having the same issue.

I know you’re still looking, but wanted to give an update to let everyone know.

Any updates?

Any suggenstions?

My Sony TV got a system update earlier this week.

It’s now running:
Android TV OS version:
11

Kernel Version:
4.14.187±ab174-60636

Android TV OS build:
RTK2.220814.001

Plex App on the TV is now 9.27.0.2856 (5e0504f)
Plex Server is now: 1.32.5.7349

Still having the same issues.
I really hope a Dev is able to figure something out.

Bumping to keep it alive.

Any updates from the Dev?

This appears to be the same problem, also a Sony TV.
Sony TV Model: x75l

Same exact errors in the logs

It seems to recognize the TV as only being 1080p, causing a transcode for everything 4k

Certainly looks like a bug

Not sure why I didn’t think of the before now, but I’ve done another test.

I knew I had a Amazon Fire Stick, but I forgot until today that it was 4K capable.
Hooked it up today, and I’m now running the latest Amazon Fire OS version, and the latest Plex version (9.28.0.3162 (75a3f28)).

I was able to successfully stream in 4K HDR quality with my Firestick.

I immediately switched back to my Sony TV with Plex (version 9.28.0.3162 (75a3f28) as well) and it’s only allowing me to stream in 1080p.

From previous tests, I do know that my friend has a Sony Bravia TV that can stream the same movie in 4K from me that my TV gets converted to 1080p.

If it’s a bug, it seems to be affecting Sony Bravia TV’s that are playing over local connections. Maybe? Somehow?

Jay,

Thanks for the reply and the link to the other forum post.

I tried what was posted and it actually did work.
Steps taken

  1. Play Movie
  2. Go to Playback Settings → Quality
  3. Change from “Play Original” to “Automatically Convert”
  4. Wait for movie to start playing again.
  5. Change from “Automatically Convert” to “Play Original”
  6. Wait for movie to start playing again

Now the movie states that it’s playing in 4K HDR directly on my Sony Bravia TV.

I’ve tested this method on 3 different movies and all of them do the same thing.

While I would prefer to use the built in Plex App of the TV, until this bug is fixed I’ll be using my Firestick from now on.

That’s a good sign. Maybe it’s a clue to help the devs figure out what’s going on

The person in the thread I linked said his android box worked when he tried it on the same TV too

Seems specific to the Sony TV. Hopefully this gets relayed to whoever works on that app

while i have a “work around” i really don’t want this to close until it’s solved.

posting to keep it alive

Well, I’m back again.

The “work around” posted above has stopped working.

Plex version on my TV: 10.1.2.4386 (8e2093a)

Plex server version: 1.32.7.7621

Looks like my TV has a system update available. So I’m going to start that and post again if that fixes anything.

How about allowing the user to “advanced” set the transcoder output for the video being played? It might not be Plex’s vision of user friendly but it allows for normal operation until the bugs have been worked out. I’ve been waiting for years now for a solution.

I have a similar problem with my older tablet. It has a 2.5k display and it can smoothly (hw acc) play a 4k h264 video (that I created with handbrake) in VLC but Plex won’t allow me to transcode my hevc 4k videos into h264 4k. Grrr. Please give us a way to override.

Plex shows “this device doesn’t support 4k” which is simply false. I did try h264 feature level 5.1 but no change.
