Hi,
I just bought a 4K Sony Android TV and wanted to try a 4K movie on it from Plex.
Unfortunately it’s not working, I have the image coming, 1 frame moving then it’s just blocked.
If I try to use Kodi with Plex addon to play the same movie with same qualitie, it works fine.
It’s a 4K - TRUEHD - 7.1 movie.
Does anyone know how to make it work ?
Thx,
Laurent
I tried to force direct play, the result was the image is working but no sound.
For the sound I use HDMI Arc to a switch link to my sonos.
Let’s start with a few basic questions to get a feel for what’s going on.
Can you play any normal 720p or 1080 files?
When you try to play the 4K movie is plex showing it as direct play or transcoding when looking at the Now Playing screen?
I can play a 1080p with 5.1 audio correctly.
My parameter for the 1080p movies are:
Direct play : Disable
Direct stream : Enable
Passthrough : Auto
When I play the 4K movie, Plex is saying Transcoding (H264 to H264 & EAC3 to EAC3)
I even tried to reduce the quality, choosing 8mbps and it didn’t change anything.
When I try to read the file from PMP on my computer, I got lag every 5/10sec, but it’s working at least.
The server is running on the NUC i5.

Why would you turn off Direct Play? You want that on.

Because I have no audio in this case
I think my Sonos are not supporting TRUE HD audio, the image is perfect but without sound when direct play is enable.
And moreover, with direct play, for the other movies, I lost the 5.1, everything is becoming stereo !
My installation is:
- Plex on my nuc for server
- TV => HDMI Arc to a HDMI switch => Optical to Sonos
Plex does not downsample audio, so it can only pass-through multi-channel audio. But it will only pass-through the audio if the device reports that it supports the specific audio codec and channel count. Unless your Sonos is able to communicate back to Plex via the optical, HDMI switch, HDMI arc (not likely from what I;ve seen), Plex won’t know to pass through the audio so it will transcode the audio to stereo. When the audio is transcoded, the stream is sent using a protocol called HLS. HLS does not support 4K video so the video gets transcoded down to 1080p. My guess is that your NUC is not capable of transcoding 4K -> 1080p in real-time. Your PMS logs will reveal is this is the problem.
To add to what movie fan is saying, HDMI arc does not support HD audio formats like TrueHD so you have a problem there.
I’ll bet if you used a Dolby digital track with the 4k video, it would be fine.
Ok, perfect, I got my answer, I will try to transcode the audio on my computer and push it again in my library.
Arf Sonos… Expensive but so limited !
Thx a lot guys.
