Hi Community,
I have added a 4K video to my server and it plays absolutely fine when played on
4K TV with roku 4K stick (wlan)
HD TV with roku streaming player (wlan)
It does not play fine when accessing the video from plex in my web browser (firefox) on my desktop pc, connected via 1gbit lan to my qnap nas, where plex is running.
It takes a very long time before the video starts, then plays a couple of seconds before it interrupts again and so on…
I have noticed that the CPU load on the NAS jumps to 100% and transcoding processes start running. The cpu load stays at ~30% when playing the video from the roku devices.
Is there something misconfigured?
Or why is the server transcoding the video for the web player?
I tried disabling transcoding in the settings, but then the video won’t play at all in the web player.
You will have a better experience overall if you use the Plex App for Windows than a browser.
That being said your NAS is most likely does not have the proper CPU to transcode 4K to 1080p (I’m assuming some things here since you didn’t list which NAS or monitor you’re using).
I wasn’t aware that there is a plex app - I never searched for something like that, as its use-case doesn’t really make sense to me, given the existence of the comfortable and univerally usable plex web.
In fact, the plex app can play the videos flawlessly.
My NAS is a QNAP TS-264 and my monitor is 1440p viewsonic monitor.
It still seems strange to me that the plex web can’t - is it maybe a bug?
I mean, why can’t it just stream the 4k video and the playing device downscales the frames to the monitors resolution, which is a much simpler calculation.
Transcoding, in my opinion, only makes sense if there is limited bandwith available, which isn’t the case in my local LAN.
