4k playback Questions

Why does it take much longer to create preview thumbnails for 4k HDR content… I mean it’s just thumbnails or is Plex doing more then I think it is

Another question I notice when your transcoding 4k content the content looks washed out as if it doesn’t send the signal for the HDR filter

When it direct plays it applies the HDR and looks perfect

It is creating thumbnails from 4K content, which has four times the info of 1080p content. More data to process.

Plex transcodes all video to H.264 8-bit.
Plex does not support tonemapping when transcoding HDR H.265 to non-HDR H.264.
As Plex does not announce product plans, it is unknown if/when tonemapping will be supported.

Thanks for the info… I didn’t realize it was transcoding I thought it was just taking .jpeg and turning them into .bif file but your explanation makes sense

I do wish Plex would give more detailed information on generating thumbnails something to the effect of Generating thumbnails for this season job 1% done of this job but i’m sure that has been suggested

and thanks for statement on tone mapping I was not aware of that issue… I’m sure Plex will fix it when 4K content becomes more prevalent
