4K streaming outside local network

Hi there,

I have 4k content with bit rates of around 50mbps. I have an fibreglass connection with speed of 500/500mbps. When I stream this content outside my local network I 'm running into buffer issues (when starting playback its giving message about server not being fast enough). When locally playing these files all is well. The files are not being transcoded. Is there a max speed for a stream outside a local network?

Currently I’m downloading so my download speed not showing max speed.

It is not decisive what the bandwidth from your site to what every site speedtest uses for testing is. What matters is the sustained bandwidth from your site to the client at the other end. And there will be many hops in between which might limit the utilizable bandwidth.

You have to measure the bandwidth from end to end.

Any suggestion how to measure the bandwidth from end to end?

Depends on what you have on either end. Transfer a lengthy file and measure the time it takes.

I have this setup on my plex server

And my friends can test their speeds to me for diagnosing issues

@teshiburu Thank you for your reply, ill give this a try!

I have tested it, seems download speed is capped around 200mbps, didnt make any changes to php or configuration. You can give it a try at: http://212.238.180.125/speedtest/example-customSettings.html

Currently where I am testing 400mbps download speed is possible.

Anyway, are others succeeding in streaming high bit rate content outside local network?

You might be asking too much of the 2018 internet. We need more “fiberglass”

There is no cap - your just limited by the end point servers

Its been a while but recently I have been testing again and now I am possible to stream without any buffering! I guess Plex in the meantime has improved this. So thanks developers of Plex!

As much as positive feedback is appreciated… in this case I’m with teshiburu and G3H8B0R2 – there’s a whole bunch of participants in providing the connection between your router, through your ISP (with all their subcos for the last mile), their backbone provider, potential transfer points, your friends ISPs backbone provider, your friends ISP (with all their subcos for the last mile), down to your friends router / home network… and every single entity can have an impact on the e2e transfer speeds.

Hence… impressive – you see me envying your network

It’s a different story if the buffering was due to transcoding or playback limitation of your friends playback device (technical or configuration limitations).

If the upload speed is high enough between me and the remote client to keep providing data without draining the buffer, then the network between me and the client does not matter right.

You are saying its not due to Plex made improvements to their streaming engine for high bitrate content?

of course the network in between matters.
Imagine you have a pipe between your house and that of your friend. You have a funnel that can pass 1 gallon per minute – the output on your friend’s side also supports passing 1 gallon per minute. That’s no good if the pipe between the houses is too thin and only supports 1 gallon per hour.

sorry… I have a touch for colorful comparisons
