Buffering content for user on another continent

I am based in the UK and most users have no problem playing content. However, I have one user based in Brazil who has a solid internet connection but the content always buffers for them. I have tried ensuring settings are max for Direct Stream and have also tested transcoding, but nothing seems to work well.

  • My upload speed is 150Mbps fibre (tested via fast.com)
  • My CPU is never maxed out (or anywhere near it)
  • Their download speed is over 200Mpbs
  • The content is mostly 720p/1080p H.264

When a user in the UK (or Ireland) plays a file, the bandwidth in the Plex dashboard jumps up 20-30Mpbs and it direct plays without buffering.

When this user in Brazil tries, the bandwidth hovers around 1-3Mpbs, hence all the buffering. All the normal video streaming services work great for them (Netflix, YouTube, Amazon etc.).

I have attached my server logs. Can anyone shed any light?

That really doesn’t tell you what your friends download speed, from Brazil, is from your server to their house. There are, I’d imagine, quite a few hops between the UK and Brazil

You could look into installing a local copy of SpeedTest and have your friend in Brazil hit that
