4K Streaming PMS Reviews

4K is becoming more common today with more and more content, media and hardware including TVs are supporting 4K. There are even some 8K TVs hardware alvailabe for sale now.
As we know 4K is larger in media size due to its resolution and requires more CPU power and network throughput as oppose to conventional 720 or 1080.

Out of the box, by default PMS is configured to trans-code from 1080 to 720p during streaming.
This question is more critical when you have multiple simultaneous streaming at the same time.

QUESTION:
Assuming you have plenty of CPU power and proper hardware can PMS handle 4K smoothly?
Can PMS support smooth 4K streaming not only locally but remotely?
I would appreciate the answer from those who actually live 4K today and stream it on daily bases. Has PMS been consistently tested with 4K?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, I have a large 4K HDR Library. I think you’re asking the wrong question here though, it’s not CPU power, but bandwidth. You shouldn’t be trying to transcode 4K so at that point, there’s no CPU involved… Realtime 4K Transcoding requires large hardware requirements (CPU and GPU), and honestly just isn’t worth it… You’re in 4K/UHD because you want the best picture quality available to you, so why would you ever consider attempting to have your computer transcode it?

Yes, IF you have the upload, 4K media commonly goes above 100Mbit/s I remote stream 4K HDR

There are lots of people on this forum with 4K

A bit of reading:

Only remotely. It always tries its best to direct play locally assuming the client can handle it.

Most of what you are asking is in here.

Regardless of the above the beta transcoder engine will happily transcode 4 x 4K Remuxes down to 2Mbps with little effect on my KabyLake using QuickSync.
But the fact that it can doesn’t mean I would (currently at least) set up my system to share 4K with people who cannot take advantage of it.

I looked at the link about 4K.
I do have the hardware and bandwidth.
However there are two questions since by default PMS set to trans-code from 1080 to 720 for remote sessions.
There is no question that for local direct play by default is the best option. however, I am specifically asking about REMOTE connections.
Assuming remote connection supports both hardware and bandwidth does it have smooth 4K direct play?
What if remote is 1080 TV then what will happen if you are forcing direct 4k play by changing PMS remote default?
Thanks again

I answered this question above… Yes, if you have the bandwidth to support a remote session, 4K works fine, but bare in mind, 4K movies often hit bitrates over 100Mbit/s so you’d need AT LEAST that to support the outbound stream… Not even including packet overhead, and the routing between you and the client

It will be as smooth as the weakest link. Whether that is the server and/or client internet, the server resources, or the client limitations.

You cannot force 4K to a non 4K client the server will transcode as needed.

Please read the entire thread linked previously above.

So bottom line I should set remote on PMS to original quality - direct streaming?
All hardware and bandwidth allows, of course

the server should be set to original, the upload speed should be set to whatever your internet upload is.

the client should be set for remote = original

depending on the client capabilities/limitations, the server will stream direct play/direct stream, or transcode as needed.

unless your client is an nvidia shield or perhaps atv4k, don’t expect to direct play anything 4k with hd audio.

Can you please clarify the recommended setting for

“server should be set to original”

“the client should be set for remote = original”

I am trying to find the recommending setting but Can’t find them.

Am I in the right place?

Please see screenshots and kindly advise. Thanks in advance.

If there is no upload speed set - what is the default upload speed?

Can you please provide screen shot for the following:

“the client should be set for remote = original”

Just look in whatever client settings usually under quality or video.

So the issue here is that on the internal LAN server, for home use only, there is no option available to set Remote Access to Original. It doesn’t exist because remote access to this server is disabled. Is there a solution how to play 4K content DIRECT = Original on server which has no internet access, only LAN connection?

this whole thread was about remote 4k being transcoded.

now you say this is only for lan use?

local streams do not have any restriction at the server level.

only the client will determine if transcoding is required either due to client compatibility or how the client local quality settings are configured.

if you are trying to stream 4k through web browser without transcoding, its not going to work.

I agree. I started this thread without many details and did not want to make this topic to complex by starting off with I have two servers…

I did not want to open multiple threads for purpose of keeping it all in one chain.

I will open new thread for specific technical issues I have experienced with 4K internal and external.

If you are going to assist me with new thread I ask that all criticism is kept off the screen.

Thank you.

I don’t think I was criticizing anything, more like confusion.

But ok whatevs!
