4K Transcoding DS920+

Server Version#: 1.31.0.6654-7000
Player Version#: 9.15.0.38159

Hello mighty plex masters!

I have a question about 4K transcoding on the Synology Nas DS920+. I just got this NAS recently and I have been loving it so far. But part of the reason why I got it was because a read a lot of reviews that said it’s a great NAS for PMS, and that it could handle 4K streaming/transcoding.

I know I really shouldn’t be transcoding 4K anyways, but the reason why I’m asking is because I have noticed that if I’m streaming a 4K movie to my laptop or to my desktop using the windows plex app, my NAS can do 4K transcoding with no hitch whatsoever. But if I try to transcode that same 4K movie on my phone or on my TV I get a black screen. No loading wheel, no notification saying that my connection to the server is too slow. Just blank.

I tried messing with the preference.xml file and I added the VaapiDriver=“i965” but that didn’t fix the issue.

Is this a glitch, or am I missing something?

(Also just for reference I downloaded the SPK from plex and did a manual install on my server, so I’m not running it in a docker container.)

You have a very nice DS920+

DS920+	Intel Celeron J4125	Quad Core	4	Yes	Geminilake	DDR4 4 GB

The J4125 is good for video transcoding and tone mapping.

When streaming to certain plex player (windows app, shield pro, etc) they have enough CPU power to offload the Syno.

This is important only when you have subtitles to burn into the image.

Synology’s are NOT good at subtitle burning (they need CPU power for that right now)

You can take the VaapiDriver="i965" back out. You’ll have issues down the road if you keep it in.

In settings - Server - Transcoding - Show Advanced, make sure all the options are enabled.

If still not sure, Recreate a playback failure - Download the Logs ZIP file from the server and attach it here. We’ll look and see what happened.

Okay so for the most part if I’m understanding you correctly, the Windows Plex app is still direct playing PGS subtitles for example while the video and audio get transcoded?

So as long as I don’t have subtitles going do you think the NAS will be able to handle transcoding just fine? I’m just trying to make sure I understand fully.
