4k TV folder location

I’ve been adding more 4k content to my Plex server. Folder tree is as fallows:

-Media
    -TV
         - show folder 1
         -show folder 2
         -4k
               -show folder 1
               -show folder 2

So the 4k folder is inside TV which I know isn’t quite right. However, 1 show is being picked up fine and shows the “play version” when viewing that show. Other shows don’t show up at all. I don’t want a 2nd library for 4k TV as i have to go to that library to watch the 4k version… I’d rather have both file versions showing up in 1 library.

It’s weird that 1 show works, while others won’t. Naming is the same among all 4k shows.

Anyway suggestions?

Don’t expect Plex to fail consistently (it won’t).

You can add multiple folders to a single library, so arrange your folders like this:

/Media
     /TV   <--- Add this folder to your library
          /Show Folder
          ...
          /Different Show Folder
     /4K TV   <--- Also add this folder to your library
          /4K Show Folder
          ...
          /Different 4K Show Folder

You may also end up needing to perform the Plex Dance after changing your folder structure to something like the example above (well, while changing your folder structure). Particularly if Plex has mis-detected things as duplicates of existing items it can sometimes be a challenge to cause it to change its mind just by moving the files/folders around.

Plex isn’t particularly good at handling extra tiers in a tv-show library.
Including both /TV/ and /4K TV/ as top-level library folders will do the job perfectly fine. Just make sure one isn’t stored inside the other (as per philipsw’s example).

So i’ve changed my folder layout to

 /Media
          /TV
          /4kTV

I’ve added both paths to my TV Shows library in Plex but it’s still not working. I’ve run a “Scan Library Files” a few times and the new 4k files aren’t showing up aka no “play version” on any of the new episodes.

Is there a more in-depth way to force plex to look at the new 4k file path i added?

Remove the 4kTV folder from your tv show library.
Peform a library scan,
then empty library trash.
Then let Plex compress its database.
Followed by “Clean Bundles”
(The latter two can be triggered under Settings - Server - Manage - Troubleshooting)

The above is basically a Plex Dance for the whole 4k folder branch at once.

If you named and organized your files inside the 4kTV folder strictly according to the rules for TV shows in Plex Naming and Organizing Your TV Show Files | Plex Support
you should be getting your shows correctly recognized when you add the 4kTV folder back to your library.

NB: don’t expect to get a separate poster for the 4K version, if you have a particular tv show both as regular resolution and as 4K version.
