4k videos keep buffering every few seconds

Server Version#: Version 3.77.4
Player Version#: PS4 Pro

Hello. I installed Plex server on my new Synology DS918+. On my wired LAN when playing 2160p .mkv videos from PS4 Pro 4K TV or from Windows Chrome browser, the video playback is barely possible because it keeps buffering. My router is ASUS rt-ac68u. 1080p videos are playing fine.

I tried three different videos already, and they are all unplayable the same way. Any ideas or suggestions why 2160p videos keep buffering?

Most likely the clients aren’t able to directly playback the content.
Could be the combination of container/codecs, could be because of image based subtitles, HDR not being supported… something causing the video to be required to be transcoded – which the NAS isn’t powerful enough to do.

If I may augment & refine,

The DS918+ will handle at least one full 2160p HEVC -> 1080p transcode for any audio codec provided there are no subtitles being burned in.

Burning in subtitles is the single largest cause of stuttering playback with NAS devices.
SRT (text based) subtitles will play ok unless the player settings require Always burn-in.
PGS (image based) never work well. These are best burned in externally to Plex or removed entirely if you don’t need them

It turns out that when playing with subtitles that are part of the .mkv file that’s when I run into buffering, pausing issues. When subtitles are off, then 4k videos play fine. I can rewind and fast forward without any issues either.

I read on this page https://support.plex.tv/articles/subtitle-search/ that subtitle search from opensubtitles.org is possible, but it does not list the PS4 player. But my main plex player is on PS4. Will subtitle search be available on PS4 plex player any time soon?

I enabled the opensubtitles.org agent in plex web server app by clicking the check box, and entered my user/password I registered with opensubtitles.org. However, I do not see the option to download the subtitles as described on this page which says you can click more.. and then download subtitles. https://support.plex.tv/articles/subtitle-search/

I have the latest plex server for synology installed which I downloaded from plex website. | enabled the check box next to opensubtitles.org, provided user/pass, but I do not see any opensubtitles option before starting playback as I showed in the screenshot in my previous post. Kind of stuck.
