5 mo. of failed roku play back

Server Version#: 1.18.2.2058
Player Version#: 4.8.4 web client

I have been having the same problem as everyone else it seems with the roku player stopping a 13 - 33% and either crashing, freezing or not finding media. i have looked for months at resources trying everything that everyone else has my router is wide open and have tried changing secure connections and have adjusted transcoder setting and playback quality i have used plex with roku without any issues for a few years and then nothing now. if the player actually plays anything its extremely rare but will sometimes play the movie thru and sometime crash and other times stop playing and will not start back up… now this only happens on my own in home network (local) there are no issues what so ever remotely on other tv’s outside this network. which is crazy! if anything it should be opposite.
I have 3 roku devices in my house v3 and 2 v4’s and they alll have the same problem of course i have made sure the firmware/software is up todate.
So i have been paying for plex that doesnt work for 5 months now. would like to get this worked out before for i cancel plex i have about 3000 movies i keep on a 6TB hard drive. I have reloaded the entire library from scratch and wiped everything reloaded and that didnt change anything i have optimized drives and plex files and dumped cache many times with no improvement. I have made sure all the file secuity and drive letter access is correct and there are no drive errors or corruption… Im stumpped HELP! :frowning:
I have included a log of 1 roku player and PMS log and console log
logs.zip (17.6 KB)
Dont know if this helps downloaded troubleshooter logs too
Plex Media Server Logs_2019-12-08_15-13-33.zip (3.9 MB)

Just for clarity, which Roku is it?

My brother in law was having this but was running up against a ram limitation. (Older model)

Also, is direct play actually disabled on the client side? Logs indicate maybe but not certain if it’s a red herring.

the roku version on this log is 3800RW the software is 9.2.0 i have tried disabling direct play and tried force and auto > restart… no change i have tried direct stream > on/off > no change at the time of log direct play was on auto

As a side note that i didnt mention earlier i have no problems on the PMS that is on the desktop it only seems to be the rokus on my network.

Hmm. Ok. So that indicates it decided to transcode for some reason. I’m on a mobile device so I can’t look at the logs at the moment.

Can you tell me video codec and audio codec for the source file? Wireless I presume?

If you do the whole “check connection” deal on the Roku, what are you seeing for speeds?

codec is x264 and yes wireless the roku signal strength is excellent and internet speed is good at 35mbps

anyone else wannna give it the old college try?

I cannot figure this out i factory reset everything with no improvment. network connections seem stable on everything in my house except roku and plex. Netflix hulu etc no problems. Desktop plex app no issues. Have tried manual ip connections to PMS, no improvement. My remote connection always has a green check mark so thats not the problem. Im pretty sure it has something to do with transcoding but there are sooooo many different senarios that do and do not point to that im clueless sometimes the server finds media sometimes it doesnt. Sometimes posters show up sometimes not. Sometimes it loads to 13% sometimes not at all and same with 33% but nothing is playing anymore. its dead in the water HEEELLLLPPPP!!! im drowning…

ok so… new development lastnight i reset my router and boom everything worked like new. This has happened before and had the same result but then roku plex slowly starts to have problems and then eventually stops working completely it takes about a month for it to stop working. anyone have any clues to whats going on?

Some home routers are not very robust. If you’re torrenting, got a lot of games going, etc. the router may not have a robust ip table.

Does restarting the router always fix the issue?

tried it again and seems to be the problem anyone know how to remedy this if its the problem? i am not torrenting while watching movies or playing games im usually the only watching when this problem occurs

It’s not just active connections but stale connections that can overrun the router’s ip table.

Can you replace the ISP router with your own?

The Roku is disconnecting from the wireless AP. The server is also wireless which is not advisable, what make and model. Same for the Router/AP.

Everything was transcoded, video, audio and subtitles so the specifics of the video file would be important. The device is 1080p. Direct Play was disabled either by the Roku or Server, what are your settings on the Roku.

Local Quality

This sets the quality to use when streaming content on your local network. In most cases, you can set this to a high value (such as “Original”). Higher settings produce better video quality but require more network bandwidth.

Remote Quality

You can set the quality to use when streaming content from a remote Plex Media Server. The quality you can reliably use is typically limited by either your download bandwidth or the upload bandwidth from the source Plex Media Server.

Direct Play

Choose how the app handles Direct Play content

  • Auto – The App will attempt to Direct Play compatible media, and direct stream/transcode when necessary.
  • Force – The App will attempt to Direct Play regardless of compatibility, falling back to direct stream or transcode if a failure occurs.
  • Disable – The App will not attempt to Direct Play media, resulting in either direct streaming or transcoding the media as necessary.

Allow Direct Stream

When enabled, the Allow Direct Stream toggle allows the server to copy compatible audio and video streams without converting them and repackage the streams inside a natively supported container. You will almost always want this enabled.

H264 Maximum Level

Choose the maximum H.264 level to be considered when deciding if the media will Direct Play, Direct Stream, or Transcode.

Allow MPEG2

Allows direct streaming of MPEG2 for live TV and DVR when using original video quality

Thank you for the response i have confirmed that restarting the router works everytime the router is an at&t router bgw210-700

I have played with the settings over and over again on the roku’s

Local Quality is currently - Original
Remote Quality is set to 4 > 720
Direct Play is currently - Auto
Allow Direct Stream - Allowed (checked)
H264 is at - Recommended (4.1)
Allow MPEG2 - Checked

again i have played with all these settings with no change what so ever the only thing that seems to be working is power cycling the router.

oh and the roku plex version is 6.4 build 9. PMS is current

and yes i could replace my att router with my own… if i owned one. not in the market to buy one atm.

Only suggestion I can make would be to see if ATT would replace the modem since you are having to restart it.

Test changing the H264 level to it’s maximum, especially on the v4’s.
Make sure you are running the most up to date drivers on the server’s wireless card.
Grab a dashboard shot when you are attempting playback so you can see remote/local and what is being transcoded.
